A friend in need is a friend in deed

I have often been far too generous, giving money away like it grows on me. When I was younger I would spend all my money on my friends, and find reasons to do so. As a young man I indulged myself in the party scene, and wasted a fortune on 'the pursuit of happiness'. Putting my finances in order requires learning how to say No to all the excuses that come along to part with my money.

Today a friend I have not heard from for a while messaged me, stranded from the side of the road. For a few minutes I was skeptical, but then I weighed the cons and decided that I must be the only person who can or will help. I considered what consequences there might be for declining this request, in both possible scenarios-- that I might be deceived, or that they are genuinely in need.

I decided that it is better for me to help my friend, than to leave them without. Even at the risk of being deceived, $65 is not worth as much to me as my friend is. So I sent it, and they received. Now I wait for proof of life, when they get home, as well as repayment at the end of the month.

I don't have any collateral, so this is an unsecured loan.

Sometimes trust is all you have...

Years ago, I decided to stop being "such a nice guy" as it was getting out of hand. It encouraged dependency and irresponsibility on the part of those who felt they had a rock to hang onto and could throw caution to the wind with their money.

It sort of reminded me of the time I was stocking up supplies for a storm when I asked my neighbor if she was doing the same. "No" she said, I don't have to. I'll just ask for some of your supplies. You stocked up, so I don't have to."

She simply assumed that I would just hand my stuff over so she didn't have to stock up herself.

It shocked me the careless way in which she viewed somone else's possesions. I cut her off then and there.
