YEah its secured, on top of the hay there's a long wooden pole that is tied at both ends with some chains to the cart.

They lose almost none, there's a pole and some chains securing the hay down, but not very visible in the photos.
Ah......I'm glad. That would be a pain to have to go back and get whatever fell off!
