A Night In The Western Wastes - Part 5 (Short Story)

(Edited)

This is a story about three friends, who are on a mission for revenge, however, the main character is being left in the dark about why they're on the hunt.

I've been enjoying this tale, and have found it pretty entertaining to write for these characters and try to learn more about them as the story unfolds.

Here's The First Part of The Story -

Here's The Second Part of The Story -

Here's The Third Part of The Story -

Here's The Forth Part of The Story

M'Trada clicked the button on the console, and slowly the seldom shimmering light of their deflector dispersed into nothing, as the wind became strong. The transport was left in a light hover above the city, and Andron could feel his hair whip at his forehead. One single raindrop landed on him, and then another, and within a few moments, it started pouring.
"Okay, let's get him out of here," M'Trada said referring to the Mulu, lying dead in the back of the ship.
Andron was distracted by the sound of shifting fabric and the squeaking sounds of boots against the solid surface of the floor. He turned and watched Mari awkwardly wrestle with the body.
"Andron, come back here and help me with him, he's too heavy," Mari said eventually, as she dropped the leg that she struggled with.
He couldn't help but roll his eyes at the prospect of picking up the blood-splattered corpse of an alien, who - while not completely innocent - had done nothing to them to deserve to die.
"I didn't slab him, why don't you help her? You made the mess." He cast a glare at the Trisken, who just shook his head lightly.
"I need to stay behind the controls. Unless of course, you want to potentially take a dive from this altitude with no barrier protecting us." M'Trada smiled as if he knew he'd won the argument instantly.
He was always one to shirk responsibility and get out of jobs. It was as if during the fight he had planned an excuse why he didn't need to get his hands - or clothes - dirty.
"Well, I didn't kill him, or have any part in that madness. Why'd you two do that anyway? Who the hell is Shoni, and why are you two involved in Gank dealers?" Andron asked, as he crossed his arms and leaned back in his seat.

M'Trada leaned over to the small console between the two of them and hit the button once more, closing the ship off to the elements. "We don't have time for this, just toss him overboard and we'll be off," he as he feigned a look of concern as he looked around. "There could be TPD along any moment now, and explaining this mishap could be tricky."
Andron knew that was unlikely. The chances of a TPD petrol swinging by were as likely as a Gnosian backing down from a fight. The Western Wastes were far below the concern of any "Peacekeeper" unless of course there was some sort of raid taking place, and even then, a fleet of their ships would sooner blast civilians out of the sky rather than worry about any crimes taking place. None of this needed to be verbalized, so Andron just lifted his brow, as if to ask M'Trada if he mistook him for a fool.
The Trisken relented with a sign, and a slight look down at the control panel in front of him. "Okay, so let's just get it out in the open. But, if we tell you, can you just help us?" He asked, to which Andron nodded.
He surely would help his friends. They had been through a lot together, and he'd do all he could to help them if they found themselves in trouble. There was a niggling voice in the back of his mind though. The distance. Andron wasn't exactly close with them anymore, or at least, as close as he had been. Not since the accident anyway.
"Okay, so we were frequenting a place, Sin, it's a small club on the outskirts - the place we're going. Gank is pretty big there, and myself and Mari decided we liked it, but, rather than pay, for it, we wanted to sell it, so we could make ours for free." M'Trada cast a glance back at Mari, and she nodded to corroborate the story. "We spoke to a "friend" Shoni, well Mari did, asked if we could buy some supplies at cost, blah blah blah."
"Took our money, and left," Mari interjected.
"Where he went, not too sure, just doing his rounds. Maybe it's a misunderstanding, who knows? But, that's why we're after him, we want answers, our money, and a small supply for the trouble."
"Or his entire stash, for his life. Seems like a good trade,"

Andron was shocked by what his two friends were saying, and all he could do was sit back and stare up at the array of blue dots blasting the energy field.
"Gank, what is Gank?" Andron whispered as he shook his head.
"They're the best, small capsules, and they're just." Mari shrugged lightly, "the best."
"I mean, drugs. Why? I thought you two would be better than that, especially, becoming dealers, really?" Andron said as he clawed the side of his head in frustration. "I stop hanging around, and this happens. I barely know you anymore."

This introductory paragraph is very nicely crafted and creates the right atmosphere right from the beginning of the story.

"Well, I didn't kill him, or have any part in that madness. Why'd you two do that anyway? Who the hell is Shoni, and why are you two involved in Gank dealers?" Andron asked, as he crossed his arms and leaned back in his seat.

The dialogue also rings fluid and true. The language or tone of the story feels sharp and chiseled, works well with the tense and dangerous atmosphere. Fun to read.

And there we have it. Andron should have known something was up when out of the blue they want to hang out with them again. I would have made an excuse. 😁😁

Hahaha, I'm actually thinking of adding a section to build up to him meeting them in the patch of waste ground.

A flashback scene might help. Or maybe even a bit of a prequel being that they have grown up together. It would show how they may or may not have changed during this time. 😁😁

You know what, you're so right. A prologue would be good to set up their friendship, and their lives as young people in a post-war society.

For a time line, they're in their late 20's - early 30's now in the story. The war was 17 years ago, so they would be early teens in the prologue.
