Crawl Out Through The Fallout, Baby (Three Tune Tuesday)
I didn't have the intention of doing a fallout-specific post here, but after sharing a story about the first song I kind of fell down a rabbit hole of nostalgia and listened to a couple more songs.
Maybe - The Ink Spots
This song randomly pops into my head occasionally, and the other day I was singing it to my partner as she was changing the baby's nappy.
I usually sing it at random times here and there, and do it to kind of annoy her when I'm in one of those giddy moods. This time however Kaleb was laughing his head off at it, and I got the all-clear to carry on singing.
Maybe, and the other Ink Spots song, 'I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire' are such great songs, and came on my radar due to the Fallout series.
Fallout is a series of games set in a post-apocalypse, and there's something amazing about the use of these songs with their haunting tone coupled with images of the apocalypse that works so well, in a way that the creators used to great effect in order to sell the idea and tone of the games.
This song was used in the intro of Fallout 1, and the intro still does an amazing job of giving you an idea of what to expect from the series.
Here's the trailer if you'd like to check it out.
The Wanderer - Dion
Here's another song utilised by the Fallout series during the release of Fallout 4 back in 2015, and I think this song works well with that game and the launch material for it.
In the Fallout games, you're essentially a wanderer who arrives at multiple towns and settlements and takes on quests to help out the community with which you come in contact. So, the lyrics of this song are pretty fitting for the style of game it is, while also sticking to the 50's style era of music.
The hype for Fallout 4 was very real, I think it had been about 5 years since there was an entry into the franchise, and everyone was going nuts at the time. It was one of the last games I pre-paid for before Xtravision shut down, and I remember getting off the bus from college and nearly running into the shop to pick up my copy, and on the walk up home I was just reading the back of the box.
It's a shame now with digital downloads that the whole experience of buying a game is kind of gone. Half the fun was reading the booklet from cover to cover, or the back of the box on the way home to go and play it, but sadly that's a bygone thing now in this wild wild world of ours.
Ain't That A Kick In The Head - Dean Martin
Each installment in the series seems to change the tone up a lot by the choice of music on the playlist of the game. In Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, and Fallout 4 there are radio stations in the game along with presenters to present each of the songs and even remark on what's going on in the game.
While Fallout 3 sticks to the 50s and pre-50s tunes, Fallout: New Vegas changes the aesthetic entirely by choosing songs that fit a more Vegas/ Western Theme, so throughout this one, there are a lot of rat-pack songs, and things like that to real sell the Mojave Wasteland vibe that the game captures amazingly.
Fallout: New Vegas is by far my favourite game in the entire series, and I find that not only the setting is amazing, but also the missions and main questline.
Here's the intro to this one if you'd like to check it out. The intro itself has a great way of telling you the history of the franchise, and also showcasing snippets of the main location and multiple major factions in-game, all without giving away too much and intriguing the player enough to jump in.

War, ware never changes... I love the Fallout intros. The first one I played was Fallout 3 and I have loved Bethesda ever since!
Same, Fallout 3 was such an amazing game when I first played it and it's the first one I got into too.
Have you had a go of Starfield? I've been playing it over the last few days and it's good having a new Bethesda game out.
I haave been playing it for two weeks now. At first I wasn't sure but I am solidly hooked now. It is different in many ways but still a total Bethesda game. I think the hardness of it put me off at first but once you get some half decent gear and a new ship you are laughing. And its HUGE!
Yeah man, I'm the exact same. At first I just couldn't get into it, but wanted to. At the moment though I'm enjoying it.
I noticed it's really rushed at the start and then slows right down. I'm level 7 at the moment and have been completing a few quests.
Also, speaking of Fallout, the new tv show is coming out in 2024 which I'm really looking forward to, I'm hoping they don't mess it up.
I am quite sure they will mess up the show but will watch it regardless. I really hope they dont though as well.
It does slow a bit. Once you do some of the constellation quests and advance that a bit it opens out the worlds to you a bit more. I love Akila city but probably because it is quite Skyrim town'y!
I'm currently a few mission in with Constellation and also Vanguard, other than those two I'm doing some side missions on Mars and also New Atlantis. I haven't been to Akila yet.
I kind of wish they showed some kind of intro scene, like in New Vegas, where they tell you some brief history and a run down of the major factions in game.
Some kind of intro like that would have been nice. I found myself all fascinated with Earth and why everybody had to leave but the facts on that are few and far between,
I haven't taken on the vanguard one yet. Just completed a bastard of a one that went on and on and on for Ryuju Industries. Stealth madness which I do like but I also like brute force killings!
Yeah, I was just thinking it would have been handy to have since they asked us to choose a background/ religion and it felt odd having the option to sell our soul without knowing who we were selling it to.
I haven't come across the Ryuju Industries yet, but I've done a few long quests that I wasn't expecting to go on as long as they did.
The Vanguard Mission is actually pretty cool man, it seems like a main mission in a way, as in almost as main as finding the artifacts. There's an induction to the faction which has you take a tour of a museum that essentially tells you all the history of the major factions and it kind of tells you about what happened to Earth, but it's vague.
I agree it would have been good, at the choosing traits point I think I fucked up and chose shit ones. Grr. No chance to change them either.
The missions can go on longer than you expect and not end when you think too. I like that about them. I will give the Vanguard one a bash shortly. Will collect a few more artefacts first!
The old rich guy in Constellation is the one that takes you on a mission to Neon if you talk to him after you have done a few for them. Ryuju, is there. Its a great bladerunner-esque city.
In fact what I like about the cities is the underbelly of them. I totally didn't realise they had those parts, like the Well in New Atlantis. I like it down there!
Yeah the Well is pretty cool, I've done a couple of missions around there. The seedy underworld of these kinds of settings are my favourite aspect. I loved Cyberpunk 2077 and from what I've heard about Neon in game, it has that kind of vibe which I'm really looking forward to checking out.
Another cool aspect about New Atlantis is it's very idealic and utopian on the surface but has this horrible place beneath it.
I've just landed on Akilla at the moment to do a mission with Sam Coe, I'm looking forward to exploring some this area.
Yay, Akila is good, very cowboy Western! It's definitely a great game in my book. I am so glad I stuck with it as I didn't enjoy the first hour or so too much but now I am hooked
Same, I'm propper addicted to it now, but the first little bit of time in game I was confused on whether or not I actually liked it.
There are a couple of things that have bugged me about it, but they're heavily out-weighed by everything else that I like.
The gunplay is quite good. Much better than it was in thr teaser trailer. When you get on a bit there are some really cool handguns which take people down in one shot especially if you are a stealthy mofo which I love.
Aye, it has its flaws but I am glad it is here!
Ooh, it's been a long time since I heard "maybe", I remember it from Fallout. Cool that your little guy liked it (and your wife tolerated it as a result lol). I used to watch Fallout being played, not play it myself and it is one of the few games that I actually enjoyed. Collecting bottle caps was fun, I used to point them out lol.
It's sad that you don't get to buy games and CDs these days, I was thinking about a CD I bought that I had to import, it was so rare and it took weeks before arriving. I was so excited when I got the phone call that I could collect it. I still have that CD so I know what you mean. These generations will never know delayed gratification like that.
They're such fun games and great ones to get lost in, there's a Fallout tv series being released in 2024 which looks sick.
Yeah, it's kind of sad in a way. There are benefits to having digital download like never having to worry about scratches, clutter, or loosing the game, cd or dvd, but it was nice having that build up of anticipation for it on the way home and also being able to trade it in when you're finished with it to get a new game or something.
