Rebellions of Off-World (World Building Notes)

@alonicus released a prompt today in The World Building Community,, asking us to describe rebellions in our setting, and going into some details about the cause and effect of them.

The Rebellion That Started The Confederation
First, there was a world called Hybris, it was the Human home world in the Galaxy, and as they reached the later years of their society they had barely enough resources to go around, and along with this problem they had a population issue and were running out of space to house them, and suitable farmland.

A lot of issues were solved by food packs, nicknamed Ration Packs which was a bland paste-like substance that was also relatively tasteless. It was packed full of all the necessary nutrients for a healthy lifestyle, and one pack could feed one person for one week and could be mass-produced, with the hunger problem fixed all resources could be pooled into space exploration, and within a few years ships filled with the first wave of settlers were heading to a world out of their solar system which was dubbed New-Hybris.

After the first successful colony was established more waves of settlers were sent to this world, and soon it was thriving. Now, once again, eyes were fixed on the skies and more ships were sent to another world for colonisation, as this newly established colony was founded they named the world Thetis.

New-Hybris Rebellion
Hundreds of years had passed and with these two new worlds feeding Hybris in food and resources everything got better, but soon a liberation movement started to grow.

The people of New-Hybris didn't like the idea of working on feeding one planet, just because it was an origin world, and these thoughts grew due to people being unable to ever emigrate back to the origin world where they had never even seen. From afar, it seemed that Hybris was a luxurious place thanks to the efforts of the two worlds under its rule and the idea of having no unique identity riled people up further.

A rebellion sparked, and soon a mini-war broke out between the two worlds; Hybris wanted it over as soon as possible before Thetis decided to rebel too, which they soon did.

When war didn't work, negotiations started between the three worlds, and the Hybris government knew they had to successfully get the other two worlds under control, as without them, they would be left with cosmic enemies far too close for comfort.

After much deliberation, the three worlds formed a new treaty; in this new treaty, resources would be distributed freely, people would travel and emigrate freely, and all worlds would be considered equal - apart from colony worlds, who would need to raise their level to be allowed apply for a title; without a title, they would only be a colony world, and would be expected to pay taxes to their establisher until a title was earned.

After the birth of The Confederation, Humanity spread far and wide into the Galaxy like an unstoppable wave. They would take any suitable world they came across and with each one, they would become more powerful, the only thing that stopped their advance was the border of Uncharted Space, and the border of the Free Space Alliance.

The Artists Rebellion
On the world Jex, there was an area of the city known for affordable rent, and it was the perfect place for struggling artists to live while they perfected their talents and made some money. Soon though, this area shrank as more and more of the buildings and homes were bought, leaving the district much smaller than it had been.

Developers started to work on the area, which wasn't bad to begin with, but after they had their way the entire district looked nothing like it had. Sleek, modern, and sterile are the only words to describe the area.

"The place used to have character, when you saw a painting or heard a song from someone who lived there, you knew it, could see it, feel its presence. As the sterility of the place became apparent, all artistic endeavors were devoid of life." - Quote from a local.

The gentrification of this location led to many of the artists being forced to leave, and even a local college where many of them earned their stripes was bought and closed down. The college closing was the thing that sparked the idea to reclaim the area.

A pact was formed among some of the people from the area, and soon word spread, and this small group became a syndicate, hell-bent on the destruction of property, in order to lower the rental costs in the area.

The first acts were met with shrugs, "Bored youth," was the main culprit as far as the authorities were concerned. But soon, the destruction became too organised to be a group of know-nothings.

After a fire broke out in one of the buildings, which spread to many of the others in the area, the entire thing was taken far more seriously. A lot of people were randomly arrested and taken in for questioning, which actually worked to rally a lot more people to the cause. The first open demonstration was met with violence on both sides, and after a few weeks, many clashes, and multiple deaths the entire quarter was put on a strict lockdown and everyone was forced out of the location.

The rebellion failed, and soon every building was bought and the whole place was transformed from what it once was. Most of the artists that called the location home were forced to leave, some left the planet altogether in search of a cheap place to live while honing their skills, most, however, decided to find somewhere in the city and get real jobs. The period that followed was considered the most uninspired time to live on Jex, and after 23 years the government decided to dedicate an entire district to artists, much like the last area.
