Sharing Some NOFX Songs From My Favourite Album of Theirs (Three Tune Tuesday)
It's Tuesday, and I've had a hankering for listening to some tunes, but haven't been able to today. I was watching Babs while my partner was out getting her hair done, which took her all day because she has been entered into a hair competition sort of thing, where she's being used as a model.
She works as a hairdresser, and while she's on maternity leave, one of the girls asked her if she'd be interested in joining to competition and she agreed. Me and baby had some fun, but listening to headphones is a bad idea, especially when he's asleep, but now that she's back it gave me a chance to throw on some music and think about what I was going to enter today.
Nofx - Perfect Government
Punk in Drublic is one of my favourite albums by this band, and every song on it is amazing. This one in particular, is one of my favourites.
When I was about 2, and my mum was pregnant with my sister they decided to pack up and go traveling around Europe in our beat-up old 70's Vols Wagon camper. They got to Holland and met someone who mentioned a place they were squatting in an old disused farmhouse next to a police training grounds. We lived there for a good while, and I had my 3rd birthday there before they decided to come back to Ireland.
During our travels they had a few tapes, and Punk in Drublic was one of them, it's funny, NOFX, years later became my favourite band, and anytime I listen to them it kind of reminds me of my childhood in a way.
This song is kind of funny to me because when I was a kid I would apparently sing my own parody of this, "How did mummy get so fat." Referring to her being pregnant.
I should actually see about going through some of the old photos of that squat because there are some really cool ones of me. The place had people from all over the world living in it, and I even had a second mother over there, who I apparently referred to as my "Black mummy"
At the time, since my mum was hormonal, she would get upset about this because if I was ever annoyed at her I'd run off to my other mum.
Funny enough, there were two Scousers living there who were both thieves and for my birthday they went out on a robbing spree for me haha, I got some new shoes, a Millennium Falcon, and an AT-AT, which I still have, along with some other Star Wars stuff, as I was mad about it even at that young age. Also, the stuff they got was the vintage gear as the 'Power of The Force' line hadn't come out yet.
My parents actually have some wild stories, I'd love to get them both on here so they could share some of them.
NOFX - Punk Guy (Cause He Does Punk Things)
This is a really good one too, short and sweet. I always loved the breakdown in this where El Hefe says, "He's even more punk than me."
As far as I'm concerned, this album, Pump Up The Vallum, and Heavy Petting Zoo are the three best NOFX albums. I like all of their albums, but for me, those three are the best and came out in and around the same time.
Their newest albums are good, but I think they've gone in a totally different direction as a band, which is great for being able to hear a band evolve, although, I do think they lost a bit of their charm while gaining a lot of grit. They're in the process of ending it all and doing their final tour. I have to see them before they end for good, but they don't play Ireland. I got to see them in 2008, but they haven't been back since, so I may need to get over to England for some gigs.
NOFX - Scavenger Type
This is the last song of the album, and I think it takes it all down to a chilled-out ending, which is a bit different compared to the balls-to-the-wall speed the rest of the album showed.
The lyrics don't make a whole lot of sense, but at the end of the song it all kind of comes together in a way that does make sense. I've always loved this, and see it as the perfect close, and in a way, this always drew a parallel in my mind to Nirvana's album Nevermind, because of how the two of them are fast-paced albums, which come to a close with a slow acoustic song.
Also, the reason I see a similarity between them both is that after an extended amount of time, the final song reveals some hidden music, which I don't think bands do anymore, but back then it was pretty common.
In this, the "Hidden Track" is some out takes from both 'Perfect Government' and 'Punk Guy' the two songs I shared, and it reveals El Hefe in the box singing, and then doing different impressions of characters saying "He's more punk than me."
If you've never listened to this album stick it on, it won't disappoint.
