The Subjectivity of Art [EN/ES]

When we think of art, we automatically think of beauty and harmony. But not all art must be beautiful to be considered art.

What truly gives art life and validity is its ability to express ideas and emotions.

Today, a machine can 3D print exact replicas of any sculpture, and artificial intelligence can create images in the style of any contemporary or historical artist. It can also produce music and videos.

So the question is: are the products created using available technology considered works of art?

It’s a debate with both defenders and detractors, and one that’s difficult to resolve definitively.

Perhaps the only answer is the one each person can give—it’s subjective and depends on each individual’s sensitivity.

Modern art, in particular, is far more abstract than what most people consider art. But again, everything depends on what the observer perceives as art, and the emotions it evokes.

For that very reason, it’s absurd to think that goodness or evil can exist in art. Even if the creator has malicious intentions, the interpretation will always depend on the observer.

Take, for example, the gargoyles of medieval cathedrals. With their almost demonic figures, one might assume they represent “evil” art. But in reality, they had both practical and symbolic functions.

The grotesque forms of gargoyles were, according to the beliefs of the time, a way to protect buildings—and allegorically, a way to warn people about the existence of evil.

But in themselves, they weren’t evil because of their grotesque appearance. This brings us back to what they were meant to symbolize and the message they conveyed.

As human beings, we know that interpretations of art depend on the culture we’re born into, our level of formal education, and our artistic sensitivity.

Although certain forms of art—such as literature or cinema—can more easily spread negative messages (for example, the book written by Hitler, whose atrocities we can only attribute to intrinsic evil), that doesn’t mean literature itself is evil.

What’s evil is using art to cause harm, pain, or humiliation. That comes from the human heart, not from art itself.

As for artistic quality, that’s another debate that will never reach consensus. To simplify, we might sum it up with two well-known phrases: “There’s no accounting for taste” and “To each their own”. And that does seem to be true—after all, there are readers of Paulo Coelho and readers of Victor Hugo, and both are considered excellent writers by their respective audiences.

Cuando pensamos en arte, automáticamente pensamos en la belleza y la armonía. Pero no todo el arte debe ser bello para ser arte.

Lo que realmente da vida y validez al arte es su capacidad de expresar ideas y sentimientos.

Una máquina hoy día es capaz de imprimir en 3D réplicas exactas de cualquier escultura, y la inteligencia artificial es capaz de crear imágenes al estilo de cualquier artista actual o del pasado, y también puede hacer música y videos.

¿Entonces la pregunta es, son consideradas obras de arte los productos obtenidos utilizando la tecnología disponible?

Es un debate que tiene defensores y detractores, al cual es difícil dar respuesta definitiva.

Posiblemente, la única respuesta es la que cada uno pueda darle, es subjetiva y dependerá de la sensibilidad de cada persona.

El arte moderno en especial es algo mucho más abstracto de lo que la mayoría considera arte, pero una vez más, todo dependerá de lo que el observador considera arte, y de las emociones que en él despierte.

Por esa misma razón, es absurdo pensar que pueda existir maldad o bondad en el arte, ya que aunque quien crea el arte tenga motivaciones malvadas, la interpretación que se haga de la misma dependerá del observador.

Si tomamos como ejemplo las gárgolas de las catedrales medievales, con sus figuras casi diabólicas podríamos suponer que es una forma de arte "malvado", pero la realidad es que que tenían una función práctica y también simbólica.

Las formas grotescas de las gárgolas eran, según la creencia de la época, una forma de protección de los edificios, y de forma alegórica una forma de prevenir a las personas sobre la existencia del mal.

Pero en sí mismas no eran malvadas por su aspecto grotesco. Lo que nos lleva de nuevo a lo que pretendía simbolizar y el mensaje que lograba transmitir.

Pues bien, sabemos que como seres humanos que somos, las interpretaciones del arte dependerán de la cultura en la que nacemos, del nivel de educación formal y de la sensibilidad artística de cada persona.

Aunque en ciertas formas de arte, como por ejemplo la literatura o el cine, es más fácil esparcir discursos negativos, como por ejemplo el libro escrito por Hitler, de quien ya sabemos que hizo cosas atroces que solo podemos atribuir a una maldad intrínseca, no por eso la literatura será malvada.

Lo malvado es utilizar el arte con el fin de causar daño, dolor o humillación, y eso nace del corazón de las personas y no del arte en sí.

En cuanto a la calidad artística, ese es otro debate que no llegará nunca a un acuerdo, y para simplificar un poco, podríamos resumir con una muy famosa frase que dice que "Sobre los gustos no hay nada escrito" y "Para los gustos se hicieron los colores" y eso sí parece ser muy cierto, después de todo hay lectores de Paulo Coelho como lectores de Victor Hugo, y ambos son considerados por sus lectores excelentes escritores.
