How are you all doing? I hope this post meets you in a good Friday spirit.

It was a very interesting weekend discussion, I was not actively involved as i was under the weather. However, I still enjoyed the discussions. The world at large is dealing with alot of inflation at the moment. I hear in United states there is a crazy increase in the price of gas. Bulgaria suffers the same with us. Fuel prices are up!

Thank you all for sharing your lovely opinions.

Topic Of Discussion - Asuu Strike

I believe this is a very interesting topic to discuss. Academic sessions in some Government Universities in Nigeria are on hold because the lecturers demands money! It is not a new occurrence as this happens everytime. A course of 4 years, one would end up using 6years because of these pauses. it's crazy.

As a student, what do you think about the strike?

As a graduate, describe your experiences in the university during Asuu strike?

When do you think the strike would end finally? And why?

Have you been more productive out of school? Be sincere.

What are your alternatives if schools doesn't resume for the next 3 months?

Feel free to add your opinion or questions to the ones above.

Let the discussion begin....

Asuu strike has become Nigeria yearly break, it funny how the government are less concern because they have less or no value towards education, more over there children are schooling aboard.
Omo Asuu strike might not end anytime soon although the current information said VC forum are begging because it is affecting academic calendar and i heard there's meeting tomorrow or Sunday that will decide our fate of going back.
If the strike continues (which I don't pray for it to) am already doing online businesses and investment and learning more things in cryto things. Am also telling friends that am looking for work temporary in case a any have make i dey comot for house

It is a pitiable situation that students who are supposed to be within the four walls of classroom for intense study are been sent home to stay for sometime, not because they boycotted lectures but because the government and other stakeholders refuse to play their roles.
In my first year at the university, I was just a fresher, before we commenced first semester examination, ASUU strike started and it lasted eight months.
When we came back to school, many ladies didn't come back. Perhaps they got pregnant along the way.

The strike may not end because government is not ready to accept terms tendered by ASUU. For future to be better, the government may need to give autonomy to universities.

During the strike, I didn't get to do anything serious. If I had known better, I could have learned one trade or the other. Unfortunately, se undergraduates may take to risky ways that may cost them the ultimate price.

If school fails to resume for the next three months, undergraduates may attempt the following:

  1. Learn a trade.
  2. Engage seriously in blogging.
  3. Join an NGO project.

Exactly, I very much agree with you @mrenglish. The youth who are the major victim of all this brouhaha are very much left out in the policy making. Although, I think the thing is to let go of political apathy ourselves and the representative that may go out there to make decisions on our behalf are the one who pledge allegiance to us and not even the old Gen X or the corrupt atmosphere. But, the question is - Where are they?

@samostically finally you've tagged me correctly. Thank you.

Here are my thoughts

As a student, what do you think about the strike?

Me like this, the strike could not have come at a better time for me. I was already behind in school stuffs, but now I've started covering up.

When do you think the strike would end finally? And why?

Honestly, if I'm judging by the way things look the strike is not ending this year. Asuu is asking for 1.3 trillion and by the looks of things they are very serious. Our government ofcourde don't care too much about education so I do not see them dropping that money.

Have you been more productive out of school? Be sincere.

Honestly it depends on the area of productivity. In terms of academics, it's been slow and steady, but in terms of money and social life I'm extra productive.

What are your alternatives if schools doesn't resume for the next 3 months?

I want the strike, but I think one, two or highest three months is enough. Anything beyond will feel too much, but if it does happen I'm not overly bothered like that. I'm already planning on resuming my shoe making training once I'm done with all my labs. So it'll give me enough time to finish it. There's also more time for hive so it's a win win for me. But I may forget school work.

You think our government can provide such amount for our educational sector and looking at it it just as if this asuu board are not ready to work for crying out loud you know your government, you know what they are capable of doing and you still demanding that huge amount.
Is like everybody does not value Nigeria educational sector.

As a graduate, describe your experiences in the university during Asuu strike?

I won’t say I can relate sha because my during my own 4years in
Schools it was as if asuu was doing omugwo as they did not have time to strike at all , suprisingly they did not strike once in that 4yrs and we were grateful because the year before I entered school they had that their 8momths strike and it wasn’t funny at all.

I remember a lot of students in higher level resumed school the year we entered married and pregnant.

As a student who is being affected by asuu stike your best bet is to go for a training or a short course, enhance yourself, add more value with your time,

Realistically nobody will read so I won’t say read your books and get ahead but if you can please do if not
Just go for a very useful training or take a course online or in person.

It will definitely come in handy whenever you finally graduate

Every since I was in high school been hearing about this thing called asuu strike can you imagine the same strike that affected ourb elder ones still occurring and no solution has been provided ever since then isn't that just too bad?

Asuu strike is now some kind of yearly break. Every year the amount of time asuu strike last keeps increasing and hindering a lot.

The only time I feel this can be over finally is when the government decided to work on the educational sectors and sort out all outstanding bills

With the way things are the best thing is to venture into lucrative career.

0

It's take a good and educated president to work on the educational sector..i just pray God provides us with one in this next election

As in that asuu strike same here, i had been hearing of it as far back as primary school cos I was in primary 3 when my family first born enter polythenic and I was in ss2 when he graduated from HND. Can you imagine??!!!

0

avatar

I never experienced strike actually. My school pulled out of Asuu but that meant an increase in our fees.

For those affected by the strike now, they know better than not keeping busy with something productive.

0
0
0.000
avatar

@wolfofnostreet Yes, that is even what Unilorin does too then. But like you said it implies an increase in fees. And I heard they do pay some kind of fine too for not joining in the strike and they do pay it wholeheartedly.

The matter tire me o seriously! I nor even know whether I be student again because I suppose don graduate but I never even start to dey work on my project 🥲

I nor go blame the Asuu actually, na federal government nor wan pay them. How person go dey work, no payment? E nor fair nau

Na because their children nor dey the public school sha, God help me and every other persons make our children nor enter public school 🙁

I nor know when strike go end but I dey pray make e end after their meeting tomorrow.

Omo I nor go lie o, outside school na I take dey more productive 😂 I go just focus on making money and growing my Hive account... No stress of how to read my books.

All the same sha, make them call off the strike make I just read the book finish once for all abeg 🥲

As per the possible 3 months strike... I wan go camp for one small hideout dey run my Hive account with other online blogging site I dey involved with... E nor bad if I make more than one million before strike over 😎😂✌️

As a student, what do you think about the strike?

The current strike is disgrace to the country, a disgrace to the leaders, and a disgrace to the educational boards. My thought is that the govt and the educational sectors sees education as a threat. Because they know when youths are educated.. Then their act of running the system will be exposed and we will come for them. That way they intend to disorganize the whole thing with a set back approach on young leaders(strike)

Have you been more productive out of school? Be sincere

As a student, what do you think about the strike?

The strike is now a ritual that must just occur every year. To me, I think it has even become part and parcel of our tertiary education calendar. ASUU strike is now a game of hide and seek played by the FG and the members of ASUU using the students future as collateral. Both parties are not even concerned about the lives of the students they are responsible for. To the ASUU members, its a game of money and FG, deceit. Laslas, both parties dey deceive each other.

When do you think the strike would end finally? And why?

Maybe soon, maybe not! The FG is not ready to just do justice to all their demands and those representatives of ASUU who do the meeting with the FGs, I think are just going there for their pockets. Cos FG would just give out maybe 1% of the things (money) demanded and then boom! They resume again only to return in the next couple of month. I repeat, both parties no well!

Have you been more productive out of school? Be sincere.

I wont say more. I'd rather say normal productivity. I have been more acive on Hive here and currently taking some self learning/brushing up on coding and data science.

What are your alternatives if schools doesn't resume for the next 3 months?

Na to go learn work 🤣🤣🤣. I no dey go school again. First, go back to my hostel in school to have time for myself. Then, basically continue my self learning or try to lobby for placement in a company related to my course of study!

Thank you! Gracias!

First of all, I was lucky during my university days because I didn't experience asuu strike. My school was a new one at then and as such, we weren't registered under asuu during that period. So I may not totally understand what students who felt the Asuu heat at that time went through.
The strike may end soon. However it should be recalled that in 2003 and 2010 the strike lasted for six months and five months respectively. So it can linger for a long time depending on when the government and the academic body finalises their negotiation. But looking at the demands from Asuu this time, I personally feel that this one may not linger for a long time because the minister of labour and the educational body ( Asuu) have been in and out of meetings. Even though this is not the first time such meetings have been held in the past, I feel that this may have a good head way considering that elections are coming up soon. Our leaders will try everything not to raise an eyebrow so that they can be elected again into power. This election will tie them down.

Being productive out of school is a sure thing. Because while in school, you are limited. You are confined in just the classroom and classwork but out of school, you can explore as much as you want. So the answer to the question is yes for me as a graduate who was once a student.

If schools do not resume for the next three months, please students should learn a skill. The truth is, it is just about a handful that are doing what they studied in school. You will wonder why a microbiologist is selling hair and doing makeup. A physiatrists is now making footwear's. I am sure this is the reality of a lot of persons here. So please students should go and learn a skill. Use their mobile phones to do something meaningful. Instead of just going to social media and looking for the trending gossips in town. Do something meaningful with your phone. Engage more on hive, because apart from earning, you have a lot to learn from shared knowledge of the people here. Again, if you have money, please go abroad and study. To be very honest, our educational system has died. When it comes to field work, we are no where because we just learn theory here in our universities. But over there, they learn more of the practical than theory which gives them an edge over us And you will not experience Asuu strike

You are right here but what if the current government does not want to pay the money why because he knows he won't be re elected. I see all these things as a political propaganda and we are the lab rat

The current government is in a party who have candidates that wants to be in power. Will the party love to be out of governance soon? No.
Just like you said, we are lab rats

Honestly, you got it. In school, we are limited due to the bulky workload and all. That is why I do praise thise students who are working or running a business alongside school. In another way, ASUU strike is like a small amoubt of time to just rest from school works and get some other things done. @joydukeson

@joydukeson all you've said is facts, they may want to fast track it in hope to get votes for election, I think Asuu might have this in mind which is why they are being dogged on their decision.

As for me however it goes I'm prepared. I'm going to continue learning shoe-making. When they are ready they should call me.

As a Student what do you think about the strike?

Honestly i don't know where to start from, this strike is nothing to write home about. In 2020 we Asuu embarked on 8 months strike causing us to loose one academic year.
1 year later the strike is on again with one month warning strike, which the federal set up a committee to look into the demands for 3 months more.

If i am not mistaking that's a whole semester gone, to be honest i am tired as a student, yes Asuu is righ to demand what is theirs and my blame goes to the federal government of Nigeria.
Common how much revenue does the government generate everyday from crude oil that can't pay twice Asuu demand?
Nigeria currently is seeing not less than $8billion dollars from crude oil exportation this past week alone.

Asuu is demanding for there right and the government I gambling with our future, I should have been in my 4th or final year by now but i just barely finished the 200level before the strike commenced.

Who did we offend in this country? Why us our educational system so poor?

The same government gambling with our future send their children outside the country for better education because they know how much they have messed up the system.

A course of 5years might take you 10years if care is not taken, and then after all the frustration you go for a job interview and they tell you they won't hire anyone older than 24 or 25 years old.

Wickedness of the highest order, now tell me how can someone that got admission at the age of 20years old be able to study a five years course, serve and then be able to meet up with the age criteria?

I don't want to even talk about the extra 1 year wasted serving a country that has no plan for your future.

Monsters in human form called leaders, they call us lazy and unintelligent youths. But how can you be able to study with the education system acting like nepa light?
Who would have the zeal to read his/her book within this 3 months or so rather than looking for something to do in order to earn some money? And when the brain is cold you would call us back to come and study, read what exactly? After how many months of having a full brain.

The government has made every student in Nigeria not to have plans for there life because one way or the other they would screw up your plans.
Now the strike is ongoing and many students have gone to look for a job, you manage to get a job the next thing the strike has been called off. A year later they embark on abother strip due to lack of proper attention of the government in the education system.

It's a pity

I am tired of the whole stress, school is just weighing every student down. Check how many times you wrote jamb sum it with the number of years you have stayed in school, you will see if you had gone into business? You would have been able to achieve something tangible by now

This whole educational system is just fucked. Me I've already decided that I'll finish school eventually, but I won't make it a priority to do white collar job. School is just going to be like extra qualifications.

Lol 😂
I swear you nailed
I never had a white collar job in mind going to school also, that's why i picked a course i loved from my childhood. I went in for civil engineering, specifically building because i can't wake up by 6am to get to the office before 8am and then leave by 5pm to get home by 9pm everyday and being underpaid.
It's disheartening , that's if you actually see the job oo 😂😂

Its a pity for all. I pity myself cos I am studying a 5 year course. Those medicine students, God go help them. Although, they are really favoured cos they'd be using the time for due practicals and all. @uzuka

ASUU strike is one of the biggest problem students in Nigeria face. As a Nigerian student, I just feel the Nigerian Government is not concerned about our Educational system. I mean, looking at the main reasons for the strike, this same reason was the reason for ASUU strike back in 2019.
We have had them run around in circles about their payment system. The Government also have refused to pay the money they owe them. This is a serious issue cos without this money paid, how do we run an efficient University with many projects to execute.

As an Engineering student in a Federal University, we hardly have materials needed for practicals and this has really affected us.

In simple words, the strike is just a proof that our Government here in Nigeria don't prioritize the Education of her citizens.

The strike for now has no end in view and I feel its best that way. It's better they come to a lasting solution this time around.

It's a pity that the students who can't afford private schools are to suffer for this.
