Silver 1853 Seated Liberty half dime / Monster Raffle/ Re-blog lottery for a chance to win 3 HSBI!

I was browsing through some of my files and came across a cool little coin I had completely even forgot that I had. I the early days of the United States they were still making adjustments to currency and realized their was a need for a half dime. Back then a dime (1853) was actually worth a fair amount of money (around $1.60 today's money.) So half dimes were produced up until around 1870 before being replaced the the nickel. It's a shame really, they were much prettier coins than today's nickels in my personal opinion.

The seated Liberty design was used on US coinage from 1836 until 1891 on everything from the half dime to the silver dollar. It was engraved by Christian Gobrecht who was the third head engraver of the US mint, but originally drawn by Thomas Sully. Sully was born in England but emigrated to the US to become a very successful painter producing everything from landscapes, images for US coins, to several presidents of the United States. Gobrecht was short lived as head engraver dying only four years after his appointment. But between the pair of the two they produced one of the most beautiful designs in the history of US coinage.

This half dime may not be huge in size, but it's history make up for it in my opinion. See what you think!

I've always felt that US coins used to be works of true art. I wish they still were but fail in comparison to sitting Liberty, the Morgan, or the Peace dollar. Sitting Liberty is one of the designs I never tire of looking at, plus you can just imagine all the hands the coin has been through and what it was spent on. It give you that a real connection to all the people's lives it touched. Well enough rambling, lets just say I think it's awesome!

The “Half Dime” is a classic, I don’t see too many at my LCS…..
Up here I believe most coin collectors are holding not selling……
Myself included…… very nice coin!😊

In those times, even if it was a coin of little value, they took the time to create a small work of art.

I don't believe so, although I did read that at one point they were heavily circulated in Nicaragua.

I just saw a comedy sketch the other day where they were talking about nickels and the fact that everyone pretty much hates them. Like a wanna be quarter. I can't even remember why I saw it, but it was kind of fun. The idea of a half dime is cool. Kind of like a ha penny.

The old coins were indeed cool compared to the coins issued after WWII, although the Barbers were kinda WTF? I do think the state quarters are very cool.

My favorite coin is an Indian head 1863, Civil War era. Amazing to hold it and think of the other people who held it before me, especially in the 1800's.

The Barbers really were WTF? Augustus Saint-Gaudens said that a teenager with two art classes behind her could have done better, then again he designed the Saint-Gaudens beautiful and iconic gold coin! Nothing feels better than holding an old coin and thinking of who could have held it before you!

Did Gaudens also design the Walking Liberty? I forgot the shield nickel too. Definitely some hit & misses back in the days.

Ya, holding those old coins is very rewarding.

Walkers were Adolph A. Weinman's beauty. The Barber's were the folly of Charles E. Barber who just wasn't nearly as talented as the other two men in my personal opinion...

He may have been talented, but didn't have the vision the other greats had. Cheers!
