Silver 50 Centimes from France/ Re-blog lottery for a chance to win 3 HSBI!

(Edited)

The last few days I've been sharing silver coins I've collected over the years. Most of them when I was in the country and found them in a coin store. I decided to continue on today! This coin was one I purchased in Paris many long moons ago. It isn't the finest coin I own but I bought it when I was young and relatively poor. But it is the silver that counts!

France has a very long recorded history. In 732 AD Charles Martel's much smaller army defeated the the larger mounted Arab army in Battle of Tours stopping the Arab advance into France. War after war with England. The eventual French Revolution that didn't end well at all for the aristocracy. Even the leadership and fall of Napoleon Bonaparte and two nasty World Wars, but the French have always carried on.

This coin was minted in 1899 in Paris, ten years after the Eiffel Tower was completed. I always loved the design of the coin, take a look:

About the coin:
Country: France (Third Republic)
Denomination: 50 Centimes
Mint: Paris
Composition: 83.5% silver
Mintage: 18,000,000
Weight: 2.5 grams
Diameter: 18.2 mm
Thickness: 1.1 mm
Edge: Milled
Demonetized: Yes
Designer: Louis-Oscar Roty
Obverse: Female figure planting seeds
Reverse: Leafy branch with lettering: 50 CENTIMES 1899 LIBERTE·EGALITE·FRATERNITE

I picked up a few others at the time, I'll have to look back for my scans of those as well. One interesting thing I noticed between the Swiss coin (from yesterday) and this coin is they are identical in weight, diameter, and purity which was due to a treaty between several European countries to make their currency interchangeable. Definitely great coins for stacking due to the silver if you can get a good deal! Please let me know if you have any questions and thanks for stopping by!

And my disclaimer: Gold and silver stacking can be a fun hobby but isn't for everyone. You can lose money. I'm not a financial advisor and this isn't financial advice, please always do your own research before spending your hard earned money.

Thanks! I used to travel a lot in my twenties and thirties when I was young and dumb, but I'm sure glad I did. Now that I'm a little older long overseas flights just aren't as much fun as they used to be... I picked up silver coins every time I went to a different country, it made for the start of a great collection!

Love it. If only that sucker could talk and tell you all the people and places it has been. I would love to hear those stories.

At that time there were many legal tender coins with a good silver content. Life has changed a lot.

Silver became expensive so now they're all collectors items. Your right, it is a very different world, not all good!

Although I'm not a France fan at all, I love the design of this coin as well. I will see if I can find some of these old coins from here, pesetas in the future. There's a shop in the city selling coins and I yet have to go there to check it. But as you know, I need a driver for that at the moment so not sure when I can check it :)

I'm not a huge fan either, but they had some great coin designs. Great artists too! Too bad you need a driver, hopefully soon you won't have to anymore!

It was a pretty wild time, they sure got rid of all the royals though! Having a king or queen just seems weird to as an American.
