Silver Venezuelan 5 Bolivares coin/ Re-blog lottery for chance to win 3 HSBI!

I've always been a fan of coins from Latin America and South America. Today I thought I'd share one from Venezuela. Christopher Columbus first sailed off the Venezuelan coast during his fourth expedition and the Spanish were quick to set up settlements in the area. Although some mining took place livestock was one of the most powerful economy drivers initially. As time passed by Caracas became an intellectual powerhouse with their own university teaching medicine, Latin, arts, and engineering.

Simon Bolivar was born in Caracas in 1783 and rose to lead the liberation of much of South America from Spain. He became the first President of Gran Colombia which included much of present day Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Panama, and parts or Brazil and Bolivia. I think he ultimately would have liked all of South America to join together as one nation but it was never accomplished. He is a hero renowned throughout South America for leading their independence from Spain. Thus his bust on the coin of the day.

Sadly he died of tuberculosis in 1830 after which Venezuela broke away from Gran Colombia forming their own nation. The 5 Bolivares coin was produced in both the Philadelphia Mint, US and the Monnaie de Paris, France, depending on the year. It was produced from 1879 to 1936 and is a beautiful coin! Here's mine from my scans, a 1911:

About the coin:
Country: Venezuela
Denomination: 5 Bolivares
Mint: Monnaie de Paris, France
Composition: 90% silver/ 10% copper
Weight: 25 grams
Diameter: 37.2 mm
Edge: Reeded
Obverse: Coat of Arms with Estados Unidos de Venezuela (United States of Venezuela), grams and silver content with date
Reverse: Simon Bolivar with lettering Libertador Bolivar (Liberator Bolivar)
Demonetized: yes

It's a nice coin however someone cleaned the hell out of it at some point. But it's still a nice piece of Venezuelan history and is ninety percent silver so great to add you your stack! If you have any questions or comments feel free to add them below and thanks for stopping by!

And my disclaimer: Gold and silver stacking can be a fun hobby but isn't for everyone. You can lose money. I'm not a financial advisor and this isn't financial advice, please always do your own research before spending your hard earned money.

Also if there is interest I can post these in Spanish as well, let me know what you think!

that is another interesting piece of history from a coin.
But I wonder why the coin is minted in France?

They didn't have their own mint, so they outsourced to Philadelphia, US and Paris, France on different years probably to the lowest bidder.

Very long history! This one wasn't too circulated but was cleaned (badly) at some point. It has survived more years than I'm going to live that's for sure!

That is a pretty sweet coin. I don't know as though I am too familiar with many Latin American coins. I feel like Venezuela is still a rather large farming country. Is that true?

It's one of the few countries in South America I've never been to. I know oil has been their big economic engine for the last hundred years or so until the socialist/communist regime took over which destroyed their economy. Before that they were one of the richest nations in South America.

Ah yes, oil, I totally forgot about that. Silly me!

She is working in a different department yet grateful for living in Canada but not working in her field. She sends money back to her Mom in Caracas. She simply couldn't leave since she cannot abandon the homes she still owns, otherwise they may lose them on Squatting laws.
