Walking Liberty Silver Quarter and Some Other Goodies!

A few times a week I usually try to visit some local shops or jewelry stores. Sometimes I get lucky and find some really cool loot. Others I find absolutely nothing I would be willing to pay for. This trip there was nothing really exciting, but he had a few silver dimes and quarters that someone had brought in and sold. So I took them all, there were only four quarters: three Washington and on very worn Standing Liberty. I always liked the Liberty quarters although they really were prone to wear, on this one the date is completely worn off. But they are 90% silver and he sold them to me at spot, so I didn't complain!

I've done some Washington quarter quarter posts before so I thought it might be more interesting to talk about the Standing Liberty. The Standing Liberty quarter was designed by Hermon MacNeil to replace the Barber quarter in 1916. The model used for the coins was likely Doris Doscher and she was known as "the girl on the quarter." She became and actress in early silent movies. After her death a boradway actress was said to have been the model by the name of Irene MacDowell. We many never know the real truth. After the first quarters were produced MacNeil objected to how they had changed his design. Redesigns were made but wouldn't be ready until 1917, so very few of the 1916's were produced. Even coins in poor condition demand thousands of US dollars.

In 1917 the coin came out in larger numbers, however since the design had Liberty with her right breast exposed it appears that the Treasury Department objected. Many argued for years it was due to public outcry, but there is no real evidence that there was any public outcry. So another redesign was done covering the breast. This was the quarter that was produced until 1925 when it was realized that the date was wearing off many of the coins. So the recessed the step with the date in 1925 strikes to alleviate the problem.

I always loved the eagle on the reverse of this coin. It has soaring bald eagle that is just a beautiful design.

Although coin collecting and silver/ gold stacking is a great hobby that I love, it's not for everyone. You can lose money very easily. I'm not a financial advisor and this isn't financial advice. Always do your own research before investing your hard earned cash. And always remember if it seems like a deal that is too good to be true, it's probably a fake!

Love the standing liberty quarter, though it is hard to find a crisp one for cheap. Any silver's good silver in thr long run. Nice score.

Can't beat them for spot. Love the old style coins as you know. Standing Liberty is no different. Like @summertooth said, it is so hard to find them in a condition that is Fine or better at a decent price anymore. I have seen some at auction, but missed out because I really wasn't shopping for them at the time. Should have snagged one or two when I had the chance.

They are getting harder to find at a good price, especially in good condition. Maybe more will pop up at auction in good shape. Forget about a 1916 though unless you have money burning holes in your pockets!

Very true about the date wearing off of liberty quarters....🙄
The ones I have looks similar to the photos that you have taken of yours, where the date is either missing or almost missing......
Still keepers!😀

Me too unless it's a killer deal, but in my experience those rarely exist!

Anywhere I can find them, if I can find them. My LCSs are all long out of it.
