Hive as an common Information carrier
Hive as an Information carrier should be the ultimate goal.
Neutral.
Some people complain about censorship. Yes, it happens because of Blacklists ( that all front ends collective use) but besides the problem of that,
there is another one with a heavyweight.
Viewpoint discrimination.
Up and downvotes are in general a bad idea on the Information carrier layer. This layer needs to be as neutral as possible.
In general, from a codebase it is.
But not from a user experience viewpoint.
It's like some developer builds a way and the users use another one.
The user is always right. I know some people on hive disagree because they are thinking they will be always right.
But in the end, the user is always right.
If the users want something, they deserve to get it or they will move.
It's that simple.
To the core problem of "Viewpoint discrimination". What i have noticed, is some people are dont agree with others in viewpoints and use downvotes.
That would be semi ok, if it would not be on the Information carrier level. Because this is against Free speech.
People are hiding their true viewpoint to not be downvoted or labeled as "flat earther" with consequences to the future.
There must be a pro-free speech solution for it. POB already failed, as we can see of reward distribution over the last 12 months +
Autovotes destroyed it. Super Whales with a high % influence of rewards don't help, because some of them work in a short-term view and not in a long-term view of the platform.
The best thing would be to remove all rewards in Hive 100% from the content as soon as there is a working Layer 2 solution ( not hive engine).
This would it make also it easier to play the hive game without the politically rewarding game.
It would remove the"Viewpoint discrimination" in terms of rewarding the right view.
And it would make the overall hive a way better platform.
Hive as gas token, thats it. Or mana token if you will it call it like this.
And sure as a voting token for DAO and witnesses.
But no fancy shit content rewarding.
No people complain about like a "meme".
100% neutral content. No collective damage of some people to the platform that wants to enforce their worldview or view of how the platform should work.
And layer 2 can do what layer 2 wants. It can spread hate, censor, or play internet police.
But the best thing would be the competition on layer 2 sites. Only the best would win and the others die. This means all that negative points would die sooner or later, because every platform that acts against the user, will lose the user.
For now, hive can handle the damage of this.
But to really grow to the next level it needs a drastic change.
( not touching scalability points, it's also something needed in a long run and not tomorrow).
Anyway, some thoughts about it.
Imo, you can tinker as much as you want, move rewards here or there blah blah blah. The reality is nothing will be perfect.
The reality also is that hive despite its flaws is the only chain were someone can earn some free crypto with minimal effort. And in 99% of cases, most people here would fail to earn a single dollar with any other "earn online " method, be it affiliate marketing, YouTube, being an influencer (lmao), offering some service etc etc.
So what's my proposal? I don't know. In many ways hive has failed greatly. And in many ways it has been super successful.

As you pointed hive is super successful in some, and bad in others. I think the good points are easy to shill and the bad things are hard to work on.
Besides earning a $, I think hive could become a much higher value (user and dollar value) if some parameters change + support of the smart contracts.
Shit gets slowly better. Unfortunately thanks to steemit we had a lot of retarded whales with zero businesses skills. And the ones that do are too afraid for certain stuff (e.g. enabling ads to buy their own tokens) due to sec and regulations and shit. Yet things feel that are actually getting better...slowlyyyyyy.
Another great thing hive is great for is for networking irl. Have made some great connections thanks to it. Yet most people fail on this basic thing.. We are supposedly a social media site after all 😂

At one point I was thinking the same, but changed my mind. L1 reawars for social are the soul of this place. In simple terms it is a community building tax for the stakeholders. But it has more angles to it, and my personal view is that these rewards should always stay.
it would need a better replacement. A working one ( not HE, most likely based on smart contract).
So it could be tested first before making a decision. I think for now it would make no sense to remove it, but for a neutral internet protocol, it would be very beneficial.
For example, if it's neutral, it would allow making hive a general login alternative to the internet.
A censorship-free.
And on top of this, Web3 could be built in theory.
I mean it would be the 100% difference of full KYC and CB money.
If another working solution is found it should be on top of the curent system

I mean voting today influences all HE (POB) tokens, that's in general very bad.
In a positive and negative way.
If hive rewards are not working against L2 business models, why not. On the other hand, I don't see a reason why they should exist if enough is built around them.
We need competition at some point, and not against the main token. Between different ideas and front ends.
Negative influence from L1 effects all L2 platforms. So a whale can always "destroy" projects in terms of user experience.
With a gas token, Influence is cut. I see no reason why this should be the case.
IDK you remember the time of "posting fees" on steem. Frontends charge some fee to post on it.
The end was they had to compete against steemit and all loss that battle.
The same battle would be around the L1 token. So if a strong, working and tested solution are out there, its something that's worth thinking about.
Special to open the door for real businesses that don't want to get fucked by internal politics.
Some example, think about a religious guy powers up 3 million hive and downvote everything with female rights ( like for example a fashion L2 solution).
No rewards mean projects need to be profitable and we move away from a central point of failure.
And i will always choose the free market.

I know that, look at my montly report for top earners, the table at the bottom ... 188k (23% of authors rewards) HIVE for Septmber... its basicly realocating inflation to the DHF
