To Bee Or Not To Bee? Some Questions About Hive Etiquette

Especially for those of us who are still building our accounts (minnows and below) upvotes to be given are few and small. My question is, if we can't offer anything but we loved the post, is it appropriate to comment? Or should we just hope that we can remember to return the next day?

My personal preference would be to receive the comments, even if they can't upvote. But I still find myself either skipping the comments box or hitting upvote despite my depleted voting power. I simply don't want the author to feel like I didn't want to reward their good work. However #hivepizza and #alive are helping a lot to alleviate this problem!

Also what is your suggestion for voting? Use 100% for all, or set it lower? I have been using 100% but it seems like I haven't been over 70% in a long time, so nobody is getting the full benefit.

I will definitely be thinking about splitting it into 2 cent upvotes once my account is bigger, so I can reward more people. But at one cent, there really isn't much splitting to do???

Another thing is using multiple community tags, if not prohibited by the communities. A few encourage it! But what about the ones where it isn't mentioned?

I would like to thank everyone who has made me feel at home here on Hive. And NO, I am not going to give any names or tags. That would turn a relatively short post into a novel!!!

yes and yes

the reason there aren't bigger upvotes in most posts is because the upvote's value is drastically reduced according to how much value that post nets when it pays out

I've leased nearly 20k hp. if I vote for your post now, it'll get $0.28. if I upvote a $20 post, it'll get $0.40! so if I want to keep my curation rewards up high, I need to look for big posts instead of yours, or I won't get my lease money back, which is something I want to do.

I suggested you boost your own posts with ecency points. consistently higher values means more big upvoters will trust your post will help them get better curation rewards. I always spend at least 150 ecency points boosting my own posts. it helps a lot getting upvotes from others, trust me.

I suggest using 150 specifically from now on, as that is the best cost benefit on the upvote itsef from my experience. by not much tho

regardless I'm 100% sure it will help. sometimes I throw in a 1 day promotion for 150 points too just for kicks, but I'm not sure how good that is

If you can't vote comment. It often carries far more weight anyway; people value the interaction and acknowledgement. When I first started here I was like everyone else, I had nothing, and simply read and commented with validity and relevance. It helped build my account.

Thank you, I was worried it might be considered an insult by some. On the now dead centralized platform I first started, if we left any sort of positive comment without an upvote, it was usually not taken kindly. So I wanted the opinions of those who know Hive best :)

I comment a lot, then and now, and there's value in it for commentor and commentee. I vote though, a lot. Comments also. Just do what you would like; it's your blockchain, your account. Have fun. For me it's the commenting that helps me do so.

I think many are good with a comment when you don't have enough HP to upvote
Especially when it is a well thought out comment and not a comment for the sake of a comment in the hopes of getting a vote in return.
I personally have never checked on a commenter if they had also upvoted me.

Also with the tags, at one point I didn't care to stick in every community tag (and still pick and choose) but I realise some appreciate them especially in the first 5 so when they upvote they get Hive & the said token/s as curator.

By the way you doing good waltzing around Hive and doing your thing ;D

I try to comment as much as I can but there is only so many hours in the day

When I started I faced the same dilemma as you whether to do 100% votes or split them down and bounced back and forth
Luckily I have built up over the years and can give reasonable votes with a smaller percentage

As for receiving I enjoy getting comments and responding to them and fully understand if someone just comments as they have limited voting power the comments mean more to me

I know some factor their voting based on returns and that’s fine I just vote what I like

@wrestlingdesires everyone knows that we have only that much to give , so it really doesn't matter.
Write a good comment and that should be good enough.
I try to keep mine around the 60% mark so I can give as many upvotes as possible. If you give 100% your voting power will diminish by the time you get to ten people.
This is how I go about it.

Thank you :) I definitely want to make more than 20 comments a day! My !PIZZA and !ALIVE stakes are getting higher thanks to @flaxz ad @dibblers.dabs which has certainly made my choices easier in the last week or two as well :)

It's definitely a bonus to have access to an engagement token or two as well. As far as tactics for votes I tend to vote 100% on anything I have read and engaged with as I have been building my account and then I use a lower percentage on curation trails etc. I do this because I don't curate manually every day so my vote mana has time to replenish.

I am with you in wanting to receive the comments as well- more comments = more engagement which can help to push your posts up the rankings and get more visibility!

On the community tags front if you go over to leodex.io you can actually set a vote multiplier for each tribe token! This means that it will increase the vote weight for that token specifically and leave the rest of your vote weights the same. It's especially useful if you have stake in a tribe that you don't actually curate in that much. This helps to maximize your earnings from those tribes when you do vote on posts with that tag or when your curation trail does ;)
