An 1887 P Morgan Silver Dollar, 136 Years Old!
In 1887 my great, great Grandfather was a county sheriff in the west. He lived quite an adventurous life. Whenever I come across a coin form that era it makes stop to think he could have carrying around a coin just like this one! This Morgan I picked up from a private seller along with the last couple that I shared. This one has seen a little bit of wear but still is in beautiful condition.
Morgan silver dollars have always had a special place in my heart, just such a beautifully designed coin. I suppose that's why the US mint has started producing them again in pure silver as collectibles starting in 2021. Like I mentioned previously we are lucky that many of these saw little circulation so you can find nice examples for your stack or collection without breaking the bank! This coin is probable worth $65-$70 US, so not horribly expensive but still very cool to hold a 136 year old coin in your hand!

That's how I always looked at Morgan's, you're picking up a piece of history! I'm sure back in 1887 there were people that complained about caring around heavy Morgan dollar, and now we wish we had a pocket for them!!😀

I remember when our Government under the GSA was selling these Morgan’s.
The uncirculated ones that had too many bag marks were actually categorized as almost uncirculated …….

That’s a mint state coin. Not BU but MS61 or 62
I figured right around MS60 but I've gotten tough grades at PCGS lately. I thought I saw just a tiny bit of wear on the hair though in a magnified view. At MS60 they only run about $70 graded on a good day. But this one won't go in for grading, it just costs too much anymore. Thanks!

It's a beautiful coin, congratulations. Whenever I see a coin from that time I can't help but think that they were more elaborate. Nowadays the coins tend to be more minimalist with less details.

I still don't have a Morgan. I hear it's highly counterfeited and I am afraid I'll end up buying a fake Chinese one 😂
Counterfeits are easy to spot, just make sure things off eBay are graded. I always prefer to see it in person if it's ungraded. Lots of dishonest sellers out there, and they fakes would likely be for rare specimens so always buy graded in those!
Aren't graded way more expensive though 😅

I like it... Would you believe that when I was a Teenager, I handed my Aunt a Morgan Silver Dollar in Las Vegas and told her to put it in a Slot Machine at the Golden Nugget for me... Three Plums came up, and 14 Silver Dollars came out... I'm not sure, but I may still have those 14 Silver Dollars...
