  • At the time, he was hot in Japan, particularly with FMW, and chose to stay there where the money was better.

• The Realities of Deathmatches:
  • Sabu worked with Big Japan after leaving ECW but refused to participate in deathmatches, despite being asked repeatedly.
  • He shared that every match ended up being a deathmatch, leading to his departure from the promotion.
  • His reluctance stemmed from the unsanitary conditions and the lack of skill required in such matches.

• The Unsanitary Side of Hardcore Wrestling:
  • Sabu expressed disgust at the unsanitary nature of deathmatches, specifically highlighting the risks of bloodborne diseases and the overall uncleanliness.
  • He pointed out that bleeding on opponents, sharing blood, and using unsanitary objects like thumbtacks were common practices he disapproved of.

• Transitioning Away from Hardcore:
  • Sabu mentioned that by the time he was done with New Japan, his heart was still with FMW, but he was determined to move away from the hardcore wrestling style.
  • He emphasized that brawling with chairs and barbed wire took no real skill, which pushed him further away from such matches.

• Thumbtack Matches – A Hard Pass:
  • One of Sabu’s biggest dislikes was thumbtack matches, which he found both unsanitary and pointless.
  • He humorously mentioned that thumbtacks would end up stuck in his boots for months, further cementing his aversion to such gimmicks.

I must say that I do agree with Sabu's stand on taking care of one's own health and not jump on the bandwagon for extreme entertainment just for the sake of it.
