It is "Sabu Day" again as we delve into another one of his interviews with WSI. In today's interview, Sabu shared some fascinating insights on another legendary figure in wrestling — Paul Heyman!

• Joining ECW:
  • Sabu was recommended to ECW by his referee, Peewee Moore, and was initially contacted by Paul Heyman through a mutual friend, Linda Rufo.
  • Though Sabu was not brought in by Eddie Gilbert, his timing coincided with Gilbert's departure and Paul Heyman’s rise to power.

• Early ECW Experience:
  • Upon joining, Sabu was placed in a mask and gurney gimmick, which he felt clashed with his existing persona and a similar gimmick in Japan.
  • The early ECW roster included many former WWF stars, creating a unique blend of talent during the transition from Eastern Championship Wrestling to Extreme Championship Wrestling.

• Working with Paul Heyman:
  • Sabu learned quickly about Paul Heyman’s charismatic but sometimes slippery personality, noting how Heyman would build up wrestlers to be unbeatable.
  • Despite Heyman’s reputation, Sabu acknowledges his charm and talent as a promoter, though he questions Heyman’s financial dealings and unpaid debts to wrestlers.

• Innovations in Hardcore Wrestling:
  • Sabu was involved in the creation of the "fan bring the weapons" matches, which later evolved into the infamous Extreme Rules format in ECW.
  • Fans brought a variety of items, from VCRs to inflatable dolphins, highlighting the creativity and unpredictability that defined ECW.

• Cross-Promotions with WCW:
  • While some ECW talents appeared in WCW, Sabu clarifies that these were personal favors rather than formal agreements between the companies, driven by friendships rather than business deals.

Sabu's journey through the early days of ECW offers a glimpse into the raw and unpredictable nature of hardcore wrestling. From his initial involvement to the innovations that became synonymous with ECW, Sabu’s experiences reflect the grit and determination that hardcore legends are made of.
