Spermbirds Coming In For TTT
So, this is a band I came across back in my teens, and I've listened to them for years. Sadly though, I've never seen them live but I'd love to some day soon.
They're a band that I'm sure barely anyone has heard of so I thought I'd share a couple of their tunes for anyone that might be interested. They're a kind of skate-punk band, and they've been around for years.
Spermbirds - My God Rides A Skateboard
They only have a couple of albums, this one, however, 'Something To Prove' is such a good one, and every song off it is deadly.
I love how this song starts with that kind of slap bass, and funky sort of beat coupled with the lyrics it kind of catches you off guard when the real beat kicks in at 90 miles an hour.
I'm not sure if the album consists of two combined together because I had one before that was titled, 'Something To Prove/ Nothing Is Easy' which are two songs on the album, so I don't know if that's a version of it, or just simply an incorrect title.
Spermbirds - Get On The Stage
This one is kind of inspiring in a way, and it gave me a kick up the arse to start a band and play some tunes. I've been in a ton of bands, and most of them were pretty crap, but it was a lot of fun being a teenager with a few friends jamming out some stuff.
Here in Ireland - and especially in small towns like mine - there typically aren't a lot of people at that age who would be into alternative music, so usually when a band gets together over here, each member would be influenced by different bands or even genres which is actually a really good thing in a way because the music usually sounds very varied... it's usually pretty terrible, but at least it's not an unintentional clone due to every member being into one particular type of music, or band for that matter.
Spermbirds - Something To Prove
We've still got something to prove. I think that's one of those statements that nobody likes, but it's true. Regardless of what you're doing or how you're doing in life, you will always have to prove yourself to someone, in some way.
It's funny, they're kind of talking about themselves in a way, and this is something I was chatting with someone about not long ago concerning this band.
They have released multiple great albums, have a lot of great songs, and should be much bigger than they are. What's the one thing holding them back? Their name. Because of their name, I think they were stifled in many ways and negatively impacted them.
Personally, I like the name, and I'm sure they've found some amount of success over the years. But, I think they would have been much bigger if they had a different name.

Oh wow this is a blast from the past.
Do you know they are from Kaiserslautern in Germany and I saw them many many years when I was over to watch Rangers play footy in Europe.
Mental so it was.
Talking about Ireland here is a fun tie-up.
Many of Spermbirds were in another band from Kaiserslautern called Die Walter Elf and the first tune of theirs I can remember was a cover of I don't like Mondays .. yep The Boomtown Rats so there you go a wee Ireland/Germany connection via a Scottish football team!
You know what man, I heard they were German, but I didn't know for sure if that was true. That's class man and makes sense because the most recent gigs they did were around Germany when I looked up to see when they're playing next.
That's so cool man, I haven't heard Die Walter Elf, thanks for sharing man, that's such a coincidence haha I love these kinds of mad connections! Fairplay to you @tengolotodo I've been wanting to go to Germany for years, so I think I'll plan a trip over there for around the next time they're playing!
Oh that would be mental getting over for a gig!
