Recycling is Hard. Blaming Plastic is Easier.
Sometimes, some stores have a "Paper Bag Day," while at other stores, it’s always Paper Bag Day.
Well, that’s the new global trend now, using paper bags to be “eco-friendly” and save the planet.
But here’s the weird part, the item I bought that was put in the paper bag… came in plastic packaging.
Like, huh? Make it make sense.
But hold up… you ready for the truth? Paper bags aren’t eco-friendly at all. Most paper bags can’t be reused because they rip easily, unlike plastic bags, which you can use a couple of times.
In fact, paper bags are resource-hungry, energy-hogging, and don’t even last long. Honestly, plastic might even be the better option.
Yes! making paper bags consumes more natural resources than plastic. It uses wood from trees that take years to grow, tons of water, and a lot more energy to produce.
Sure, paper is recyclable, but only 5 to 7 times, max. After that, it’s done. Retired. Goodbye.
And even while it can be recycled, factories still need to mix in fresh raw materials from nature to make new paper.
And that paper bag you used, if you don’t dispose of it properly, just ends up rotting in a landfill, pumping out methane gas.
But hey, I’m sure your landfill has a fancy methane collector, right? Oh wait… it doesn’t.
And unless that landfill has a methane collection system, that rot isn’t becoming energy, it’s just becoming more gas.
And be honest, you’ve tossed a paper bag the moment it was empty, right? Probably just threw it wherever, thinking, "Well, it’s biodegradable anyway, so it’s fine."
HAHA, sure.
By the way, in case you didn’t know, biodegradable stuff in landfills isn’t exactly “reusable.” It takes 20, 30, even 40 years before it’s safe and useful again.
So really, using paper isn’t as “eco-friendly” as they want us to believe.
Now, on the other side, yes, plastic bags are made using crude oil, but only a tiny portion of global oil is used for plastics.
And the good news? Plastics can actually be made using renewable sources, we don’t have to rely on crude oil.
The good thing about plastic is that you can recycle it so it doesn’t end up in a landfill.
WAIT! before you start bashing me with negative comments, I’m not saying plastic is perfect, okay? A lot of plastics are still non-recyclable, like chip bags mixed with aluminum. You can’t recycle that stuff.
My topic here is about replacing plastic bags with paper bags. So don’t argue with me yet, chill. 😆
The real issue is… many of us aren’t well-informed about proper recycling. We don’t sort our trash. The government barely supports recycling facilities. So even recyclable plastics end up wasted.
Plastic itself isn’t the world’s problem, we are. People with no discipline. And honestly? Between paper and plastic... plastic wins by a little. It’s not perfect, but at least it doesn’t pretend to be eco-friendly while secretly eating up trees, water, and energy.
The real villain here? Us. We suck at managing waste, sorting trash, and supporting recycling systems. So yeah, it’s not plastic’s fault, it’s ours.
Also, the way plastic packaging is produced is a mess. If we had rules banning mixed-material packaging, recycling would be way easier. And of course, the government needs to actually support recycling facilities and programs. I mean, they waste money on so many useless projects, why not invest in something that’ll actually help?
But of course, you can’t be the only one deciding to recycle. Even if you do your part, if it’s not mandated and supported by the government, that thing you recycled will just end up in a landfill anyway, mixed in with the rest of the trash.
Did you know Germany, the top recycler in the world — recycles 56% of all their waste? And Japan converts 80% of their plastic into energy? Crazy, right?
Here are some countries killing it in recycling:
Germany #1 in the world Strict sorting laws, bottle deposit systems Recycles around 56% of all waste
South Korea Super organized trash system People actually follow the rules, or get fined Recycles about 59% of plastic
Austria Strong recycling culture Advanced sorting and collection systems
Now for waste-to-energy rockstars
Sweden Recycles and cleanly incinerates waste for energy Only 1% of their trash ends up in landfills.
Netherlands Focused on a circular economy Uses high-tech sorting to reuse plastic.
Japan Great at sorting, incinerates 80% plastic for energy Only 20% of plastic is reused as new products And if your country’s not on this top list… don’t worry.
Your country is probably still Top… in corruption. HAHAHA!
But if you really want to save the Earth, there’s only one thing to do, lock up every undisciplined person in a fenced-off zone where they have to live with their own trash.
But hey, that’s a little too villainous, right? So yeah… maybe let’s just recycle instead. Seems easier than becoming the world’s supervillain.
Did my story stress you out? Go read the comics I made so you can relax a bit.

Where we live we don’t get paper bags or plastic bags, we need to bring our own bags. But I’m having the same questions you bring up, but we do recycle 😂
That’s why it’s better to always bring a reusable bag.
Here where I live, recycling is useless, unless you personally haul it to a recycling center or junk shop.
Because everything the garbage collector picks up just ends up dumped together in the landfill anyway.
No we have seperate companies who pick up the recycling ready trash.

yeah I’m always torn about this paper bag and plastic thing. Most stores have those paper bag day or whatever just so they can say they’re an environment friendly store. But here’s the thing, while not all, some of those ‘paper’ bags have plastic lining inside so that it won’t rip easily and spilled liquids won’t absorb into the paper. Defeats the purpose of being eco friendly 🤷🏻♀️
Another thing that makes me laugh is how there's an eco bag on display at the side that you're basically forced to buy, because you know the paper bag is going to rip. They’ve really turned it into a business.
agreed, some of those are actually expensive. Safe to say they’re only after the money and don’t really care about the environment.
