Silver one half Balboa from Panama
I've always had an interest in central and south American coinage. I don't have a huge collection of them but I generally try to pick them up when it's a good deal. Panama is one country that I really don't have much collected, but I do have this nice Medio Balboa (medio meaning one half.)
Vasco Núñez de Balboa was a Spanish explorer and conquistador. He was born in about 1475 in Spain and was executed in 1519 as a usurper to the throne. Interestingly his first solo venture was as a planter and pig farmer in Hispaniola but failed miserably and ended up in debt. To escape the creditors he escaped as as stowaway on a ship and through some luck rose to the office of mayor in Santa María la Antigua del Darién, in present day Colombia. He then began his conquest of native tribes in search of treasures for Spain. He was the first European to discover the Pacific Ocean and conquered Panama. After his extensive plundering and conquering his demise came from a rival Pedro Arias who had him arrested and tried as a usurper to his power and the Spanish throne. Then shortly after had him beheaded. Despite his early death he is a respected figure in Panama even having the currency named after him.
Enough history, here's the coin:

These are great coins to add to any collection or stack. Although only 40 percent silver they are still silver. Sometimes you can find these with descent premiums, but as of late it seems like anything silver has high premiums. Thanks for stopping by and feel free to ask questions or leave comments below.
And please remember that collecting coins and stacking gold/silver is a great hobby but definitely not for everyone. You can lose money and you have to research before you make any purchase. Before you spend your hard earned money always do your due diligence by researching what you are buying. I am not a financial advisor and this isn't financial advice, I'm just a guy who loves coins and gold/silver stacking!

Very nice one half Balboa!😊 40 percent Silver is still Silver my friend, sounds like these are a good addition to your stack, especially if you can pick them up at a good premium !😇
Have you seen the 20 Balboa Silver coin, it’s a heavy weight!😊
Yes it is a heavy weight, about 4 ounces of silver! They don't come cheap though...
I picked one up years ago as a teenager boxed………..
Probably paid too much back then Lol!😮
It’s a keeper!😊
That's awesome! Definitely one to hang on to!
Definitely!😀
It is still silver!! And vintage, has numismatic value!

(no space) to get help on Hive. InfoYour welcome! I had forgotten much of the early conquistador history as well so it was nice to remember all the horrible things they did in the name of God... It's a sad history. It's a very cool coin, the numismatic value is definitely going to always be higher than it's silver value.

The purity isn't great, but this one has numismatic value because of the condition to make up for it!

Rocky Balboa?
Must have been Rocky's great, great grandfather
That is pretty interesting that they would choose to put him on a coin after all the crap that he did. I could see him being on a Spanish coin, but not one out of south or central America. That is just pretty crazy. It's a nice coin either way!
Those conquistadors were nasty folks. Apparently when they first arrived in Colombia the natives were using poison darts and arrows. Would have been a nasty place to be on either side. I don't get why they put him on there either, I would think a more appropriate choice would have been an ancient native leader. But it goes to show that the winner gets to write the history books.
Ain't that the truth! I would have guessed a native leader as well. Oh well, I'm sure most of the folks on the US currency weren't spotless either.
Most definitely not spotless on our side either!
Nice Balboa. I have the originals from the early 1900’s i think it’s 1904 or 1905.
Oh sweet, those are pretty pricey!
Life of a Conquistador is rough, win some and lose some, you never know when a rival will stab you in the back. At least he got his mug on a coin.
No kidding, most just disappeared into history! I guess discovering the Pacific Ocean made him famous (even though the natives had discovered it long before he did!) Definitely a rough life, rivals want to kill you and the natives are shooting poison free frog darts and arrows at you. The world may not be perfect today, but I would take it over living back then.
I love these silver posts with some history explained, this way I learn something new here and there as well as enjoy the shiny rounds!

Yes I did, loved it! Oh and thanks for the tip :) good that you got them back!
Me too! Thanks for appreciating the history, for me sometimes that's the most interesting thing about writing up some of these is I learn stuff I either had long forgotten or never knew!
True, in my case even more so I guess because I hated history in school. I had the most boring teachers for that class and I started yawning as soon as I walked into the classroom. I missed a lot of history thanks to being sleepy :) haha
I think we've all been there!
Maybe, I envy those that were able to not yawn and stay focused. While typing this, I even started to do so :) lol
losing money you mean buying something that is beyond the expected price, right?
This is an amazing coin, it gives that air of Spanish Colonization era lol
Yes you can overpay for items and end up with much less than you paid. Research is always key when buying older coins. It's a very cool coin with Balboa on there, Panama actually produces some really nice coins! Thanks!
