Three Tune Tuesday: Some Van Halen!

In the early 1970's Eddie Van Halen and his brother Alex started up a band in Pasadena, California. They brought in David Lee Roth as their front man and rock history was born. The band Van Halen was responsible for bringing hard rock music back into popularity through there success in the late 70's and mega stardom in the early 80's. Of course with all rock bands there is always bumps in the road as they reached stardom including drug use and creative differences. There were times that Roth was so high on cocaine he couldn't remember to song lyrics on stage. After their huge success with the song "Jump" and the album 1984 Roth left the band to pursue a solo career

Not being done yet the band brought in veteran rock singer Sammy Hagar who fronted the band through more highly successful albums and tours. He then also left the band in the 90's stating that the Van Halen brother were hard to along with. Eventually Hagar briefly returned to the band in the early 2000's and left yet again and they reunited with Roth once again. The line up then added Wofgang Van Halen (Eddie's son) to the band. Sadly in 2020 Eddie Van Halen died of cancer ending the bands years of up and downs.

Today I'm sharing three fun songs from the David Lee Roth era, which I always felt was their best music. First up is a performance of technically two songs that they almost always pair together. The first "Eruption" really set up Eddie Van Halen as a rock god leading into "You Really Got Me" which is a cover of the original by The Kinks. This was a live performance ins 2015:

The next one is a hard choice because it's not my favorite song by the band but is by far probably the best known. "Jump" came off the 1984 album and was when they really soared into rock history, but here it is, the original video of "Jump":

Last up is a great song that I couldn't find a live performance that I really liked. The ones from the 80's were on VHS but didn't transfer well so they are too fuzzy. So I went with the 2015 remaster. Here's "Everybody Wants Some":

That's my entry for Three Tune Tuesday, thanks to @ablaze for sponsoring the event. Thanks for stopping by!

Funny how that worked! One song and video changes American youth culture!

They had a hard road, for such a successful rock band !😲
“ creative differences” probably kills most bands………

Sad but true, makes me glad I didn't follow my dream to be a musician. I likely never would have had that kind of success but the negatives seem to hit most musicians.

That seems to be a common problem…….
Everyone wants to follow the artistic path they want, and no one can get along!😲

Mega stars indeed, and yeah I think they were best with Roth as the front man!

I think that's what most people feel to, I like Sammy Hagar but he just didn't measure up to Roth.

I just looked up the bio for Sammy Hagar, I never knew he as in a band called Montrose (1973-1975), I have never heard of them, and it is a wee town just up the coast in Scotland near Dundee!

Montrose was before my time, I best remembered him from the song "I can't drive 55". I know he owns he own his own brand of tequila, but not nearly as good as some good Scotch made near a small town near Dundee!

Great band. I remember getting the cassette tape for 5150 back in the day and playing it till I wore it out. I had no preference of Roth or Hagar. I liked them both as front men. I think Roth probably had a better presence on stage though.

It's hard to beat Roth's stage presence, he's a showman by nature.

And 5150 was awesome too, I think we all had that problem with the cassette wearing our, which is why I usually bought on vinyl and made a copy on tape so if it died I could just make another one!

Ah, I disagree. I'm a Red Rocker fan through and through. I like the stuff with Roth, but I probably like the Hagar stuff more. I got to see him a couple of years ago with his band The Circle. Lots of famous people in there. It was a fantastic show. It was almost like an all star band, so they played all kinds of stuff. All that being said, as a whole, Van Halen is one of my favorite rock bands no matter who is fronting them.

I love the Red Rocker too! They were one of my favorite bands no matter who was in front. Too bad they disbanded after Eddie died, it would have been fun to see his son try to fill in for his dad.

Yeah, that would have been cool. When I saw them it was Michael Anthony, Sammy, Jason Bonnam, and someone else. I can't remember who now.
