Uncommon Mexican silver round/ Re-blog lottery

I've always enjoyed collecting Mexican coins and bullion rounds. They always have great artistry and produce very attractive coins and rounds. Currently the Mexican Mint produces bullion rounds called Libertads, which are beautiful works of art. Prior to the Libertads they produced another silver bullion round often called 1 Onza (ounce). They were only produced from 1978 until 1980 so they aren't real common.

The obverse of the round is an ancient coin press that was first used in the Mexican Mint to produce coins. The device was run manually by spinning the top to produce enough rotational speed to press down and mint the coins. They were eventually upgraded to steam run devices and then to an electric motor but the process was the same. Making coins back then would have been a very tiring job!

The difference between a coin and a bullion round is pretty simple. For it to be a coin in needs to have a denominational value stated on the coin (like one peso) and rounds don't have any denoted denominational value. So this is a bullion round just are the present day Libertads. Just in case you were wondering!

About the round:
Country: Mexico
Mint : Casa de Moneda de México
Year: 1980
Mintage: 6,104,000
Composition: 92.5% silver
Diameter: 41.5 mm
Weight: 33.625 grams
Thickness: 3 mm
Edge: Reeded
Obverse: Ancient coin mint press with lettering: CASA DE MONDEDA DE MEXICO (Mexico Mint)
Reverse: A scale with lettering: UNA ONZA DE PLATA PURA LEY .925 PESO 33.625 GRAMOS Mo (One pure silver ounce Fineness 0.925 Weight 33.625 grams Mexico Mint

I've always thought this round is a little confusing. It states that it is one ounce of pure silver but when you look at the fineness it states that it is sterling silver which is 92.5% pure. But when you work out the math it does actually have one troy ounce of silver in it but likely has some copper mixed in to make it more durable.

These are great for collectors and stackers alike since they have a great design and a full troy ounce of silver. Although I think the newer Libertad design is much prettier. Here's and example of one:

I have a couple of those. I like the original Onza

They're nice rounds, and it seems like the premiums run higher on these anymore. They didn't used to be too bad.

I love the original Onza! I have one and love how hefty is! 😁

This definitely can be confusing with the 1978 to 1980 1 Onza stating that it is sterling, and also 1 ounce pure silver!🙄
Collectors and stackers would understand. I wonder if the average Joe on the street would be totally lost Lol!😇
I need to add one of these to my stack, very unique!😀

They are pretty cool. In 1981 they started the Libertad. It is confusing though, sterling and yet it states pure silver..

I started collecting Mexican silver back in the 60s, and I took a break in the 80s, being newly married, and missed this coin entirely!🙄

I like these rounds, it was a shame they didn't stick around. But I'm sure the Libertads sell a lot better. Christmas is coming up fast... it seems like it was just Christmas yesterday!
