WOO! Sabu Puts His Neck on The Line!

A Big Hello to all WOO Fans! 🥳🥳🥳 WOO!

Today, Sabu tells a tale of resilience and determination from his days in the wrestling world. It is an incredible story of enduring and overcoming a severe injury in the ring. So without further ado, here's my regular point form summary of Sabu's interview with WSI for all the time starved WOO fans out there!

• Chris Benoit’s Backdrop:
  • During a match, was instructed by Chris Benoit not to tuck during a backdrop, which led to an awkward and painful landing.
  • Ended up with two cracked vertebrae, C3 and C4, which weren't severe enough to sever the spinal cord but caused significant pain and long-term effects.

• Injury and Immediate Aftermath:
  • Worked just two weeks after the injury, despite the pain persisting for 20 years.
  • Initially advised to get surgery and fitted for a Halo but opted out to avoid long recovery time.

• Decision Against Surgery:
  • Wrestling promotions at the time were unwilling to pay for the surgery.
  • Concerned about losing momentum in his career and the potential year-long hiatus required for recovery.
  • Chose to continue wrestling to maintain his rising popularity, despite the risks.

• Persistent Pain and Limitations:
  • Constant neck pain led to an inability to perform certain moves, such as the wrestling bridge.
  • Adapted to the limitations and continued to wrestle, albeit with ongoing discomfort.

• Financial and Career Pressures:
  • Had no paid time off, so financial necessity drove him to return to the ring quickly.
  • Two weeks post-injury, had to fulfill bookings in Japan, enduring a grueling schedule.

• Doctors' Warnings:
  • Doctors warned of the risk of paralysis if he continued wrestling.
  • Despite these warnings, chose to proceed, believing he could manage the risk.

• Wearing a Neck Brace:
  • Initially wore a neck brace in matches, which provided some comfort and stability.
  • Eventually stopped using the brace under pressure from New Japan officials who questioned its necessity.

• Additional Injuries:
  • Wikipedia incorrectly states a second neck break; actually suffered a severe-looking but less damaging injury attributed to Taz.
  • Suffered a knee injury in Puerto Rico from slipping on thumbtacks, leading to a year of limping.

I must say that hearing about wrestler's pushing through wrestling injuries is testament to their incredible resilience and determination. Despite facing severe pain and risking long-term health, the drive to continue entertaining fans and maintaining a career pushes them to go past the pain barrier. These stories give me (and hopefully you readers too) a deeper level of respect and admiration for the athletes who put their bodies on the line every time they step into the ring.
