My long journey of dry and irritated eyes.../ Re-blog lottery day #3!

It all started in after I had Lasik surgery many years ago now. I had grown tired of wearing glasses and contact lenses so I decided the have laser corrective surgery to free me from near sightedness. I had been wearing glasses and contact lenses since about 8th grade because I couldn't read the board at school. It was an amazing thing once I had glasses because suddenly I could see the leaves on the trees which previously usually just a green blob unless I was really close.

I did lots of research and found the best surgeon that was relatively close to where I was living. It still entailed a three hour drive each way but I was ready to ditch the glasses for good. After surgery I could see great, better than 20/20! But then my eyes started to feel gritty, watery, and burning a lot of the time. I had developed dry eye syndrome...

Dry eye syndrome is a disease that can affect anyone, however women over fifty have the highest number of sufferers percentagewise. There are multiple potential causes including insufficient tear production, eyelid gland dysfunction, eye surgery, and autoimmune diseases t name a few. But they all result in dry problematic eyes.

Most of the time after Lasik surgery dry eyes are common but usually go away over months. Mine did to up to a point. But I ended up using lubricant drops several times a day to keep the symptoms at bay. Certain things always make it worse such as fans (especially ceiling fans), wind, air travel, and extended use of my laptop or smart phone. The burning, grittiness, and watering returns quickly if I'm not careful to keep my eyes lubricated and avoid environments that made it worse. I've had times I needed prescription strength treatment to adequately calm my eyes down.

If you are suffering from any of the above symptoms it's a good idea to set up an appointment with an Ophthalmologist (not Optometrist.) They can guide you through options to make your eyes less symptomatic and improve you overall quality of life. Here are some tips to help you out if you are having symptoms of dry eyes.

  1. Avoid fans and blowing air from vents blowing into your eyes.
  2. When you buy eyedrops avoid any that say "Keep the red out", because they make the blood vessels constrict and often the chemicals can make dryness worse.
  3. Look for eyedrops that are preservative free, many drops in bottles come with preservatives to avoid contamination. Unfortunately they can further irritate your eyes if used too frequently (more than four times a day.) Drops without preservative won't cause this problem but can be more expensive.
  4. When walking outside in the wind wear wrap around sunglasses to keep the wind from irritating your eyes.

If these steps aren't helping you should get in with an Ophthalmologist to pursue other treatment modalities that often involve a prescription as soon as possible. Life really is much more pleasant when your eyes aren't constantly hurting and watering! Feel free to ask any questions or comments below.

I also use glasses but I don't really consider surgery. Doesn't bother me using glasses.

My previous @v4vapp proposal has expired. I have a new one which is running but unfunded right now. I'm still running @v4vapp and all my other services.

I've just updated v4v.app and I'm getting ready for some exciting new features after the next hard fork.

Please consider asking your friends to vote for prop #265 or consider unvoting the return vote.

For understandable reasons in the current crypto climate it is harder to get funded by the DHF, I accept this so I'm asking a wider audience for help again. I'll also add that I power up Hive every day and usually power up larger amounts on 1st of the Month. I'm on Hive for ideological reasons much more than for only economic benefit.

Additionally you can also help with a vote for Brianoflondon's Witness using KeyChain or HiveSigner

If you have used v4v.app I'd really like to hear your feedback, and if you haven't I'd be happy to hear why or whether there are other things you want it to do.

I’ve been lucky enough to always have a great sight, but in recent few months my eyes started being a bit blurry and watery. I think it’s because of staring on the screens a lot, so I try to reduce it and see if it helps at all.

Hope your symptoms have improved by now too.

Screen overuse will do that, some lubricant drops might help too

Oh, that sounds like a shitty thing to have. I only know this condition from having irritated eyes because of a fan or airco but that's just an incident when it occurs. Sounds like an annoying thing to have constantly or having to use drops all the time.

I always wonder about laser surgery, it always seemed super scary to me to have to open my eyes and see the laser approaching. Isn't that super scary and hard to do?

The surgery was one of the best things I've ever done, glasses and contact lenses went away! The dry eyes may be annoying but definitely better than having to reach for my glasses when I woke up in the morning.

The procedure is very simple in reality, of course after they give you some benzodiazepines (like Valium) you are nice and relaxed. The laser does all the work according to measurements taken prior to surgery, all the surgeon really has to do is attach the docking system to the eye and press the start button.

How are you feeling? Any less pain?

I can imagine that you take dry eyes for granted compared to the downsides of having glasses and lenses.

But aren't your eyes automatically trying to blink when there's something approaching and isn't it super scary to see that laser thing?

I definitely have less pain but that's probably because of the meds, I'm in doubt if I should skip them tomorrow morning when I need to see the traumatologist as I'm afraid otherwise he will not refer me for a scan. On the other hand, I assume this doctor knows that these meds take away the pain so maybe it's stupid to be in pain for the appointment.

I really hope he will refer me to the physical therapist as well because it would be god to know which exercises are easy and smart to do for quick relief. Thanks for asking :)

Physical therapy is always the first thing you should do for back problems. Surgery should be a last ditch effort, because it doesn't always work (and might make it worse.) Take your pills before you go because he will want to examine your back which might make it hurt more.

In eye surgery your eye is held open with a speculum so you can't blink. Otherwise it might be pretty hard to do! Plus the pills really decrease the anxiety so it's not really all that bad and you don't feel anything since it's all numbed up.
