Silver great blue heron coin from Cayman Islands/ Re-blog lottery

The Cayman Islands are located in the southern Caribbean not too far from Jamaica. It is well known to have the highest per capita income and standard of living in the Caribbean and one of the highest in the world. The average income there is $71,000 US, not too bad! It is also a nation that has no income tax whatsoever which makes it a nice tax haven, with over 100,000 companies registered in the Caymans. There are more companies than there is are people, and one address is said to have 12,000 companies registered at that one location. Apparently a great place to incorporate and avoid taxes on your business!

While I was living in the Caribbean I never had a chance to visit. The main reason for that is it was too expensive! It's a very popular tourist destination and hotel prices were always too rich for my blood back in the 90's. I understand it's a beautiful place, I'll have to make a point to visit when I'm down in the Caribbean again.

I picked up a coin from the Caymans when I was still living in Puerto Rico. Since I didn't have any coins from there in my collection I purchased it. I was able to talk the shop owner down on the price because some idiot removed it from it's protective capsule and fingerprinted the front of it. Still it's a very pretty coin.

Most of the coins I've shared lately were made in the Franklin Mint, but this one is an exception produced by the Royal Canadian Mint. So this one is made of Canadian silver! Have a look:

About the coin:
Country: Cayman Islands
Denomination: Two Dollars
Mint : Royal Canadian Mint of Ottawa, Canada
Year: 1972
Mintage: 11,000
Composition: 92.5% silver
Diameter: 40 mm
Weight: 29.45 grams
Thickness: 2.55 mm
Edge: Reeded
Obverse: Queen Elizabeth II
Reverse: Flying great blue heron and denomination

A very nice coin made out of sterling silver and has the portrait of a young Queen Elizabeth II. It was a shame that the front of the coin had been mistreated, but I still like it. The back has a beautiful great blue heron which over winters in the Caymans. This is the only coin I've ever had from the Caymans so it's a special part of my collection.

The great blue heron is a bird found throughout most of North and Central America, but some do over winter in the islands of the Caribbean. Their beautiful blue wings span over six feet, one of the largest in the Americas. They like to eat small fish, frogs, snakes, shrimp, and even small mammals like voles or mice. Typically they like marshy areas and wade to find fish in shallow water. Interestingly they build big nests out of sticks that don't look too comfortable compared to other birds nests. The nesting site is usually in a huge colony of herons. Safely in numbers I suppose. Overall it's a really cool bird which I knew very little about until this morning.

Here are some pictures of the great blue heron:

Pretty aren't they? I can see why they placed it on the coin!

That's a great looking coin! It's unfortunate about the fingerprint. Is it possible to remove it with acetone, or is the damage already done at this point?

I have to say, that's probably the most flattering portrait of the queen that I've seen on coins bearing her image.

That fingerprint won't take away from its melt price-- silver doesn't care-- but it killed whatever numismatic/collector value it had.

With damage done, the value lost won't be restored by cleaning it. Even if the coin looks spotless after fingerprint removal, on closer examination it can be detected that the coin was cleaned. It's best just to keep the coin as-is inside some sort of protector.

Cleaning coins is always a bad idea. It still has some numismatic value just not as much as one without some moron's fingerprint. Silver is silver, it is always going to be worth something! In a couple hundred years this coins will likely be very valuable since only 11,000 were made, but I'll be long dead by then!

Never clean a coin, takes away all the numismatic value. She looked much prettier when she was young!

Normally, I agree with not cleaning it, but when the value is already diminished by a fingerprint, and if it's not already worth a significant amount, I'd personally rather get rid of the fingerprint if it doesn't damage it to the point it makes it visually less appealing. To each their own, though.

I think long term, in a couple hundred years someone might be grateful I didn't clean it. After all it will still be around when I'm long since dead. I have coins from two hundred years ago and I'm grateful to the owner at the time who took care of the coin. We are temporary custodians!

No wonder the blue heron likes to live in the Cayman Islands! 😇
No income tax that sounds so nice !🤗

That's how a country should be run, no taxes! Maybe our country should convert itself into the same type of tax haven, we could probably eliminate taxes too with all the money being pumped into the country!

I honestly don't know. If I do it must not have stood out in my mind. I have always collected Caribbean, Central American, South American, and US coins. A few from Europe mixed in. There may be some Canadian coins with a loon, but I don't have many Canadian coins.

No income tax is really dope!
I am always wondering how do they get their income as a government?

It's possible that the Cayman Islands imposes duty fees on imports. This would be different from tariffs which are more like penalties.

Given its status as a very popular tax haven, the Cayman Islands could also have a program where foreigners can become citizens of the Cayman Islands in exchange for a sizable investment in the nation or an outright price. I don't know what that cost is, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was anywhere between USD 100K to USD 1M. Pay that amount, become a citizen and acquire that nation's passport.

Indirect taxes, meaning imports and exports usually. Our government could learn a lot from their model...

Belgium and the EU are very good at that too! It always frustrates me when the US give one billion dollars to Pakistan so they will be our "friends"... People here in the US need that money, there are a lot of people living in poverty and homeless war veterans who really would benefit from that kind of cash.

As a Pakistani, I also wish Pakistan will not become a proxy state of US. The money they send are for politicians who favour sender's and their interests. There is no free money in this world. Every present comes with strings.

Exactly! It's bribe money. I know that many people in Pakistan live in poverty and around the world. I like helping people, I don't like the fact that all they are doing is making politicians rich for favors. The rich politicians aren't going to share with those who really need it. There is no free dinner, it always comes with strings attached.

If u noticed, I worked at a kind of casino hive system in my university degree aka pizza lottery.

I am also the founder of Hivepakistan, psychologically building the morale of the nation and teaching them the cons of abusing the system.

I am a member of HL staff responsible for some challenging tasks including the financial side.

I was ex cartel curation management.

I am a part of HiveDR in antiabuse space.

I am working on automation in hive and hbd trading system for all hivers. Along with some other crazy projects in pipeline. But no launch is promised as everything needs ton of money and I am not born rich.

Lifting a lot of things with my bare hands leaves me no time to blog. Sorry to keep my readers waiting for it's not possible to come back till I delegate some work to other people.

Why am I doing this much? I believe in hive not by words but through my actions. When hive price will rise we all will enjoy some juicy returns.

Here on hive people barely earn 10$ on a post but if we focus on entrepreneurship and business hustling, 10$ daily can be passive income either from investing or other ways.

The Cayman Islands Dollar (KYD) has a good exchange rate relative to USD. If you can find a place which accepts foreign coins for foreign exchange, then you can buy KYD coins at a discount from a coin dealer, stack them, and exchange them for closer to the KYD-USD rate. It may take a while, but for KYD it's worth it.

For reference, KYD does better than GBP, and EUR does better than KYD.

It does much better, they have a very strong currency! The biggest currency exchange deal I missed out on (since I was young and stupid at the time) was right after Kuwait was invaded by Iraq. Their currency bottomed out, then once the allies liberated them the currency shot up to over three dollars US.

Its funny: every ever so small country in the world makes silver coins nowadays. Or has them made in Germany or somewhere else. Must be a real good business to sell them.

Back in the seventies and eighties the Franklin Mint was the go to place for these countries. They made awesome coins. They stopped coin production in the eighties, which was a shame. Niue now produced the most commemorative coins in the world, a tiny island in the Pacific ocean of course outsourced to New Zealand and other mints. They have some cool coins!

Yes, I got some Niue 2oz Turtles myself. Really nice coins and somewhat different to the standard coin shape. I have some Fiji bar coins as well. If you look around it seems every tiny coral island in the Pacific has issued it own coins. Also most African countries, even such desolate places like Somalia. As I said, there must be some money to be made with this.

Niue must be making a lot of money off of these. Did you see my post with the Pac Man coin they produced?

I guess they do, else they wouldn't make those coins. And they know that as a independent country they have the right to issue currency coins and nobody else can.

No I dont think I saw the Pacman coin, but I have seen plenty of other. There is just about everything out, Simpsons and Star Trek and Batman and whatever. But those are usually quite expensive, not my thing. I'm a stacker, not a collector.
