Silver One Shilling coin from the United Kingdom/ Re-Blog lottery for a chance to win 3 HSBI!

When sharing coins I have collected during my travels abroad I keep hearing that I don't share enough coins from England (mostly from those in England, go figure!) There is a simple reason for that, I honestly just don't have than many! I have collected silver bullion coins from the UK frequently but I think I've shared those some time back. I also enjoy picking up Six Pence coins because they are usually inexpensive to pick up because they are only fifty percent silver. But today I wanted to share a coin I did pick up on my last trip to the UK.

This isn't a real big or special coin, what caught my eye was the image on the reverse. It has a great lion wearing a crown on top of a crown! That was really why I bought it, just because it was great design.

This coin was minted in 1940 just as the UK had recently entered into World War II. There were Nazi planes dropping bombs in London, British planes were dropping bombs in Berlin. The whole of Europe was caught in the middle of a horrific war. the coin is a solemn reminder of a very rough patch in English and European history that is now long gone but not forgotten. Take a look:

1940 lion one shilling.png

1940 shilling.png

pictures mine

About the coin:
Country: United Kingdom
Denomination: One Shilling
Mint: Royal Mint
Composition: 50% silver
Mintage: 11,099,000
Weight: 5.66 grams
Diameter: 23.5 mm
Thickness: 1.7 mm
Edge: Reeded
Demonetized: Yes
Obverse: King George VI with lettering: GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX HP Translation (George the Sixth by the Grace of God King of all the Britains) from Numista

Reverse: Crowned lion atop crown with lettering: K G ·FID·DEF·IND·IMP· 19 38 ·ONE·SHILLING· Translation (Defender of the Faith Emperor of India) from Numista

I think this is the only Shilling coin I own, I have lots of Six Pence ones I've bought over the years though. Although it's only half silver it's got some great history and is in excellent condition. For stackers they aren't ideal since they're only half silver, but from a coin collectors stand point they are great. Usually not too expensive and you could easily build a complete set. I like it because it's a souvenir from a great trip that was a blast. If you haven't been to the UK it's a great place. I still need to make it to Scotland, I didn't have time last time around so at some point in the near future I hope to make it there too!

If you have any suggestions, comments, or questions feel free to leave them below, and thank you so much for stopping by!

And my disclaimer: Gold and silver stacking can be a fun hobby but isn't for everyone. You can lose money. I'm not a financial advisor and this isn't financial advice, please always do your own research before spending your hard earned money.

Love it. A big core of my silver holding is old coins. I don't have a lot of British that isn't Canada or Newfoundland

I love old coins too. Old British is hard to find on this side of the Atlantic, mostly American and Canadian most places. If you're lucky a shop might have Mexican coins.

A very difficult time in World history…. Things could’ve gone so different, so wrong……….
I hope the world never forgets ………
I have to agree with you. The Lion on the reverse is pretty cool!🤗😊

Sadly humans tend to be ignorant morons and always forget. If Hitler hadn't attacked Russia he would have won. So many young people are being indoctrinated in schools to believe communism and Marxism is the only thing that works when historically it's been the cause of mass murder, corruption, and starvation where it's been used...

Thanks! The lions on English coins are always cool!

Very well stated my friend……….
Where we live we have a large Russian community, and even to this day they remember the massive loss of lives battling Hitler!
Generations were lost fighting for freedom!

UK Silver comes in third place after my US Consitutional, and Canadian silver coinage, most of them left over from my Father's estate. The majority dated around the world wars.

UK silver is great stuff, just harder to find in the US and Canada. Here US Constitutional is obviously easiest to find. It's great that your Father left you with a nice collection. All parents should do that for their children in my opinion!

I'm wondering with these not fully silver coins, how do you store these? Do you put them plastic or without any cover in a box? Just curious :)

How is your weekend? I'm so happy that it started raining yesterday lol, usually these are false promises when we get warnings for rain or thunderstorms but this time they delivered a day early even .. it will be nice when it cools down a bit here..

Coin flips are an easy and cheap solution.

risingstarmint.com

You can put them into plastic capsules but they usually cost to much in my opinion.

Weekend not to bad so far, still battling a little inflammation in my right foot so not as active as I would like. But it's been cloudy with thunderstorms here too. I love Spain except for the summer heat, it should start cooling down pretty quickly now that Sept has finally arrived. How's your back treating you?

Aha coin flips, I've seen them, but didn't know the name, thanks!

How's the inflammation today? I've had a less painful day today, thankfully. It was also the first day that I didn't lift anything at all, not even a bottle of water, lol. Orders from the boyfriend.

It was nice and rainy for the weekend, didn't mind honestly. Guess summer is really over here, meaning we will have some 25 degrees days mostly and some weeks (this week as well I think) close to 30 but more clouds.. so not really the swimming in the ocean type of weather anymore. I personally don't mind as I rather have spring and autumn here than real summer.

I don't mind changing the short pants for longer ones as last year it meant we could still wear our open shoes for most of the year lol. Just leg covering and still t shirt with open shoes most of the year, love it. I hate wearing coats so let's see how this winter goes.

Weekend was really painful, today it was less than yesterday, so hoping for an uptrend. I have to carry the kitten to the vet tomorrow though, which I only realized just now that it will not be the smartest move. I may ask my boyfriend to bring her to the car for me, after that I"m on my own as he has a meeting. It's for her check-up.

Gonna wish you a good week!

I'm glad you're somewhat on the mend! I hope it keeps improving like you say, an uptrend in less pain is a very welcome thing! My right foot is still trying to cause trouble but I think it's calming down finally. Hopefully soon we will both be back to normal!

It's a little cooler now here too. I prefer late summer/fall temperature wise. I remember when I live in Arizona I wore shorts year round, it never got cold enough to need pants. Well except for work of course... But being able to wear sandals year round is so nice! I'm glad it's cooling a little there but not cold as of yet!

It's probably a good idea to ask your boyfriend to take the kitten to the car at least, less stress on your back. Too bad he has a meeting. One thing I can say is you're a dedicated pet owner! I hope you continue to improve!

Ah now you are talking!

Damn as a kid, I used to have loads of old money coins, but then who knows what happened to them.

the coin is a solemn reminder of a very rough patch in English and European history that is now long gone but not forgotten.

Not to mention British history ...

The older ones are sterling before they cut them to fifty percent. Older ones are awesome!
