The "Great Kentucky Hoard" of gold coins has recently been found in a corn field in Kentucky
Metal detecting has been a hobby of mine for a long time. You get some nice time in the outdoors and occasionally find some really interesting items. I've never found anything horribly valuable but there are many buried treasures just waiting to be found. Recently in a corn field in Kentucky a huge hoard of gold and silver coins was found. The exact location of the find and the name of the finder are so far being kept anonymous (wisely in my opinion.) The coins were sent into NGC to be labelled as finds from the "Great Kentucky Hoard". More than 800 gold coins were found in the find.
Some ideas behind the stash being hidden in the first place all revolve around the United States Civil War (1861-1865.) Kentucky declared themselves as a neutral state but it didn't keep the war away. It is thought that this hoard was hidden to prevent the Confederacy soldiers from taking the gold. The fact that they were never retrieved most likely means the person who hid them didn't live long enough to come back and get them. Who knows what horrible fate became of him or her.
One of the most valuable finds was this $20 gold double eagle:

The coin above is estimated to be worth six figures because the motto In God We Trust
is missing from the coin.

Some of the coins found in the hoard include:
U.S. Gold Dollars from 1854 to 1862 (makes up about 95 percent of the find)
Twenty $10 Gold Liberty from 1840 to 1862
Eight $20 Gold Double Eagle Liberty from 1857 to 1862

From the dig for the coins, apparently there is a YouTube video out there of this as well.

It's estimated his find in the cornfield is worth in excess of millions of dollars US. GovMint.com is the seller for the coins so take a look there if you have thousands to blow!
The interesting fact about this find is that it's not the only one out there. Chances are many other hoards were quickly hidden around the same time and are just waiting to be found. The outlaw Jesse James used to hide stashes of gold coins in Mason jars and it's well documented that most have yet to be found. In Europe amazing finds are unearthed fairly often as people there have been stashing valuables for more than a thousand years. All just buried in the dirt. The Caribbean is full of stories of pirate treasures hidden away on remote desolate uninhabitable islands. In the Philippines the Japanese army was said to have hidden away millions of gold in booby trapped caves as they were forced the retreat quickly from the country. Not to mention all the sunken ships full of gold just waiting to be found.
That just touches on few of the stashes out there still. So don't forget to take the metal detector out of the closet once in awhile, hopefully one of us will be the next to find buried treasure!

Amazing story!🤗
Can you even imagine being the person that found all these Gold coins!😊
Stashing coins in Mason jars……………,
Not a good thing!😳
As a kid I talked my best friend into contributing silver coins to a hidden stash in a mason jar, that I buried in my backyard!
One year later, I dug this up, and over the winter, the pressure from the earth, crushed the mason jar !😬
I’m really not sure if we found all the silver coins !😇
From the couple of Jesse James' jars that have been found they were broken but the gold was still inside! I can't imagine finding that kind of hoard in the middle of a corn field in Kentucky of all places...
Too bad you lost your treasure in the Mason jar experiment!
Makes me want to go buy a metal detector and comb the beach at boulevard park !😊
I think as kids we probably recovered all of our “ buried Silver Treasure “
Maybe Lol….. it’s been too many years Lol!😇
When I have a day free I still try to go comb the beaches. You never know what you'll find, usually a lot of garbage but every now and again you get lucky. I knew a guy once who found a meteorite at the beach!
That’s impressive, with so much history along the shoreline up here it definitely would be worth exploring with a metal detector!😊
Pirate treasure awaits!
“I think I see Gold over there Lol!”😇😊

I read about this find in a few different publications. One of them had the area it was found but n name. If only it was me…… but I wouldn’t be selling them.
I would be silent as the grave, and I would keep them too!
Buried treasures...
Do you have the link to the YouTube video?

Imagine your detector beeping and then finding that lot!
Break out the champagne!
My Garrett 400i have found a fistful of loose change, house keys, nails & screws, a working cell phone, gum wrappers, buttons, beer cans, a lawn chair, but no treasure yet. At least I spent some time with my kids on the beach.
Even a working cell phone? You scored! At beaches I've found gold jewelry a couple times which was a great day in my eyes, but no gold doubloons.
My grandpa used to take me out with his metal detector. He found stuff over the years but b4 I was born or when I was 2 young 2 remember. I wish I could have a conversation with him about metals! I was still playing with toys when he passed away. He was definitely wise on this stuff unfortunately the many kids prolly sold anything when he passed. Man I would have loved to interview him for a Hive post!
That's too bad, many of the most interesting family members do die young for some reason!
Even if you don't find anything, going on a treasure hunt is always fun.
The thrill of the treasure hunt!

That was all over the local news here since we get the news out of Louisville. Pretty cool actually. Need to break out my metal detector and make retrain myself on it. Not sure I can walk around and swing it too much, but it would be nice just to get out and look. Problem is finding places to look these days.
That's a problem a lot of places. Getting permission for private land and some states won't let you do it on state land. I know a lot of the "professional" guys talk to land owners and offer them 50% of what they find. Even if you can't get around as much as before it's still fun to try.
Seems like a waste of money to have them all grades and cased up in such condition. What am I missing?
What a sweet find! Just seemed odd to have such condition graded up. Doesn’t change how sweet a find it is! Man I’d love to find some gold coins 😃
They aren't graded, they're just certified as part of the "Great Kentucky Hoard". Does that add value in my book, honestly no. But for some collectors once lost treasure that is found adds value to them. For shipwreck treasure I could see more value personally, but this one I really don't. Then again I probably wouldn't have sold them or even told anyone if I found them!
Dang that is so cool. You're right though, there must be so much burred treasure out there. There's even some in my yard now :D
Hell yes, you just made some future treasure hunter a happy person! There is really a lot of stuff just buried waiting to be found, it you're lucky you find it, nine hasn't panned out yet...
